No it's not, I like it don't get me wrong but it's just the first with parts of BB added in, it's grinding the setting into the ground, DaS never needed a sequel, there was barely any wonder in DaS3 compared to the original and that's a huge part of what makes these games good, you can't just say lol the flame is dying AGAIN. You can't just take DeS, DaS or BB and iterate on them with slightly better mechanics or a few tweaks here and there and state the game is now better than the original when there is no spark to the game, no originality.

If the only major complaint is the lack of new setting/story, then I guess that just comes down to which Souls game you've played first. Demons Souls was doing the exact same thing that DaS1 did, so DaS1 wasn't even really the first game with this setting.

Nevertheless, DaS3 had some of the best new settings of the entire series, and the best iterations of old settings.
Irithyll dungeon was the best jail/dungeon setting, other than maybe Demons Souls.
Irithyll itself was an interesting mix of Indian/Middle-Eastern dancer enemies in a snowy environment

I think you are referring to level design not setting as DaS has a completely different world from DeS, this free's them up to do new things while not being too held back by the original, like have an interconnected world not separate levels connected via a hub...so no DaS1 did not just do the exact same thing as DeS, it introduced a new world, different story and completely different level design.

I'm not saying DaS1 and DeS aren't different. But the differences between the two are about as powerful as the differences between DaS1 and 3. Hell, DaS3 even has a nexus area, so it really just comes down to different lore. At least for me, the lore/story in Souls games in the last thing in my mind when I'm playing it anyways.

DeS - Kick started the series, laid the groundwork for Souls games.
DaS - New world with interconnected level design.
BB - New world, removal of shields and introduction of guns and new health mechanics drastically changes gameplay.
DaS2 - ehhh... made some incremental improvements like a better framerate, has a 2 on the end, multiplayer was apparently improved.
DaS3 - Aimed to be closer to DaS1, often too close, many aspects were added purely for nostalgia, movement and level design similar to BB, has a 3 on the end.

See where im going? there's not much to be excited or surprised with direct sequels.

Not even disagreeing with you, my original point was just that DaS2 and DaS3 aren't bad games at all. I fucking loved the setting of Bloodborne, and the Souls setting will never get old to me, but I'm glad their killing the franchise before it becomes Cowadoody: Medieval Warfare.

My ideal Souls game would have been set within some bullshit fictional Old West setting near a bunch of ancient mesoamerican ruins. You could have a "clash of two cultures" thing going on.

Never said they were but they are clearly not the best direction for the series, the setting was obviously meant to end with the endings to DaS1 and the general mythos of the game was that the world was going to die, the sequels were made to cash in on the Dark Souls name first and foremost and it shows, DaS3 at absolute best is still not as the rest of the games. B team should have made some other kind Souls game, with their own IP that still had Souls in the title, they would have been free to do their own thing in the spirit of the series, instead with DaS2/3 they were stuck between their own vision and being tied to the Dark Souls name.

Disagree. With caveats. If you mean direct sequel has to keep all the same mechanics then I see your point.

But Souls games are very sensitive to small changes. So doing what Dark Souls 2 did and adding a death penalty but lots more bonfires, or putting a cap on enemy respawns fundamentally changes your approach through the world.

So small tweaks to a bloodborne 2-- like what if they dropped the regain mechanic? or allowed dual trick weapons? Or made bloodtinge more viable early on? These would make the game feel very different.

Also, while DeS and Dark Souls were given different names, they were practically sequels, so I think you're splitting a very fine hair.

I wouldn't say a completely different setting as well as level design is splitting a very fine hair, yes they could very well be sequels in the sense that Final Fantasy games are sequels yet are completely free to use a different setting and alter mechanics, this is what plays to the Souls/BB series strength, a new name gives the devs the freedom to keep the spirit of the series but not be tied down by it like DaS2/3, I simply do not see the benefit of just making numbered sequels over new IP's (unless those numbered sequels were like FF games) given how great DeS, DaS and BB were, why not continue that and have another game with a new setting and changes to mechanics, level design, boss design whatever instead of just having Bloodborne 2, please explain what is the overwhelming draw of play Bloodborne 2 instead of something new?
