Even when I was 10 years old, I found that whole "getting lost" thingy to be bullshit bad design.
I don't want to get irredeemably lost such that the story comes to a complete halt, especially when many of those older games offered shit-all to find besides the main story and some healing items, and the game locked you out of most areas anyway until you found the next main quest destination.
If you are going to be non-linear, let it be a player choice or an important, well thought out mechanic.
Besides, most JRPGs publishers these days are simply too damn broke to pull off AAA open worlds.

I think that it captures the spirit of the game pretty well, and is nicely illustrated. It's hard to understate the impact that Ultima 3 had in Japan. It and Wizardry is in the DNA of every JRPG (Dragon Quest was heavily inspired by both of them). So, I can forgive a bit of the ol' anime in the box art.

Well, I'd rather breakdown my choices to be honest. But one that comes to mind is the Witcher series.
Gameplays okay, but what really sets it apart is it's inherent sense of framing and scale.
The focuses on a specific section of the world and largely one character, this gives it an advantage in numerous ways over modern RPGS like Star Ocean where each character or planet feels thrown in or tacked on. The stories are not really globally centered around some world ending calamity (just war, pretty typical), but what's nice is you're just an above-average guy caught in the middle of things.
It's basically Western Vagrant Story.
I really liked Drakengard.
