No it isn't. Even DSP beat the game, because it's very intuitive to farm souls (which double as currency and exp) if you need a boost.
Just avoid playing Dark Souls 2 right after Dark Souls 1: the animation timings are slightly changed so you'll be fucking up parries and getting your shit slapped constantly. I'm dealing with that right now.

To be honest I actually find this a pretty easy way of getting across to normies that a game is good but challenging.

For example I got my housemate to play Metal Arms: Glitch in the System by telling them it was the "Dark Souls of maskot shooters". Guy's a big Dark Souls and Ratchet and Clank fan so it got him interested.
I know what you mean though, it's annoying when you here it used, but those sorts of comparisons are kind of inevitable. It's super recognizable and people will always compare shit to other shit.
How good is Metal Arms though, eh? One day we'll get a sequel, I still believe.
