Dungeons of Dredmor is seriously entertaining and comfy if you can simmer yourself down and not scream REDDIT at the humour. Not perfectly balanced, but loadsa replay value. Gud & knowhow comes with experience.

Crypt of the Necrodancer's high up there too, but you have to not be bad at video games. Less management and strategy and more reactive.

Both have killer soundtracks.

nethack has very popular online telnet servers.

The "online" aspects consists of a shared pool of "bones" files (if any player dies, the current level is saved and another player can find their corpse, allowing somebody to find both all their equipment... and potentially the powerful monster that killed them) and additionally has a feature where you can watch people playing their games or have your game watched.

Roguelites
>Crypt of the Necrodancer
Easy to pick up, difficult to master. Try this if you like rhythm games. The easy level will be too hard for neo /v/ and the hardest difficulty level will make a completion throw their computer out the window.

>The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth/Afterbirth
Fun dungeoncrawling with poo poo and pee pee themes. It's very easy to beat the game as everyone except perhaps the secret Afterbirth character the Keeper. The game doesn't stop you from getting so LOL OVERPOWERED that you can instantly kill most of the hardest bosses in the game.
>Spelunky
Really great platformer/dungeon crawl. It has sort of an Indiana Jones theme.
>FTL
You already own this anon, right? You better fucking already own this.
>Enter the Gungeon
Do you like danmaku and dungeon crawling? This is probably your thing.
>Steredenn
Found this during the steam sale. You fight bosses and upgrade your ship. Randomization adds great replay value and twist on the heavy memorization involved in most shmups. Fun for fands of hori shmups.
>>
>>343629598
Are you seriously going to dismiss the rest of the features because it has optional difficulty sliders?

Same goes for DCSS though swap player corpses for player ghosts. One neat functionality is DCSS has an IRC server that notifies of ingame activity (player has died, player has found an Orb, etc.) so you can tell when someone has died and they can tell when someone has killed their ghost.

>Why?
Because aside from various quality of life interface/control adjustments, + adds many times more the content than the vanilla game. Even disregarding the very welcome balance changes.

Not only does this content make the game much more interesting as is, but it also does wonders in terms of subverting the biggest flaw of the vanilla game. Making each new adventure much more unique and with a considerably greater degree of possible variation. Instead of the adventures starting to blend together.

The difference is huge. I'd almost go as far as to claim that the non+ version of the game is but a taste of the real game. With the real experience being OWH+.
I am really glad I didn't burn myself out on vanilla OWH before transitioning to OWH+.

there's an adventure mode with absurdly detailed combat.

For example, if you get into grappling, you can grapple a monsters tongue with your toes while you jab out his eyes with your fingers and get a tight grip on his right knee with your armpit. Then bite him in the neck and shake vigorously.

Things like torn muscles, blood loss, blood production, fractured bones, internal organ injures, etc all all tracked and recorded and factored in to everything.

You move faster then the shadow travels for starters. So as long as every few turns you're moving forward, you'll rarely if ever have to worry about the shadow gobbling you up.

Unless you get caught in a building with a ton of paths, or end up stuck between an exit and a really hard to kill foe, running into situations like this is rare, but the action of being pushed to keep advancing does make the game more...dynamic? It's that kind of experience that keeps you going organically, and I love it for that.

That's the thing though. One Way Heroics has a lot of replay value. But that's also where the weight of + kicks in. Most of the replay value of OWH comes from OWH+.
And the One Way mechanic is a really neat little thing both in terms of thematics as well as gameplay.

It's not like you can only move in one single direction. You have a full 8-way movement. It's just that the left side of the screen creeps up on you. For visiting shops instance like you mentioned, you'd need to run towards the shop in advance, and the earlier you started running towards it / the faster you ran towards it, the more time you get to spend at the shop/town before it's consumed by darkness and you've got to bail. It's honestly pretty interesting.
Monsters and loot on the roads to the towns can stall you so that it gets tough to get to the towns in advance. And you're in a constant struggle of whether or not you should or shouldn't grab all the loot, or whether or not you should or shouldn't fight all the enemies or avoid/run from them. In favor of giving you more space between you and the ever crawling darkness.

Sometimes be it in dungeons or towns, you can even find yourself in peculiar situations where your greed in wanting loot / extra time with NPCs&shops, that you become locked between the creeping darkness and the walls after the actual exists have already been consumed. Forcing you to spend energy and or resources to blast through the walls instead and make your own exit. But the funny thing is that it sometimes really is worth it. Yet it's not for free. Energy is needed in battle or if you want to snag extra treasure along the roads. And resources are naturally always needed in a pinch.

You're a true hero in One Way Heroics. Constantly venturing onwards towards the demon lord, to prevent the world from being consumed all while you actually witness the world being consumed before your very eyes. With it actually being a very central game mechanic of the game itself.

I'm making one. Idea is you play your own single-player game, but NPC adventurers are server-wide, and there's some manner of "auction house" where you can sell off your mage gear that you'll never use and buy memey warrior gear you can use.

Sound good? Or sound shit? lmk desu senpai

They have removed many things, but they did so for good reasons, and have made many additions. Lava Orcs were never in a stable version of the game, and Djinn were ludicrously unbalanced.

The next version adds Uskayaw, a god whose worship is similar to being a Lava Orc - as you fight risky battles against multiple enemies your piety swiftly rises granting you powerful abilities, climaxing with being able to insta-kill ANY monster.

However, outside of combat your piety will almost instantly drop to zero and must be built up again with more intense combat.

ToME is one of the most fucking tedious and boring games there is. It uses the Diablo style loot system where its just a bunch of goddamn incremental number increases and percentage bonuses where nothing really feels like its a big improvement over what you had, but it gets a free pass because haha! its a roguelike! you cant hate it! There's tons of fucking better ones though. Even modern Dungeon Crawl is better than this garbage. Fuck off retard.
>>
>>343629175
Nope. Genres evolve. Genre definitions based on the Big Four are obsolete.

FTL is a roguelike.
Rogue Legacy is a roguelike.

If it has permadeath and a randomly generated world it's a roguelike. Fucking deal with it.
>>
>>343634561
>real life is a roguelike.
>..woah...
Sorry anon, those two games aren't roguelikes.
>>
>>343634353
That's probably why they don't call them roguelikes. They call them roguelites. As in "lite" the watered down diet version of something.
>>

>>343634561

>>343634709
Superfluous meaningless terms anger me, especially when they are as retarded as yours. We don't repeat syllables in English.

Define that exact separation between your definitions please.
>>
>>343634715
I'd argue you are the only real person on this planet and everyone else is an NPC. When you die you'll respawn on a new earth that will be randomly generated again.

Not trying to get religious. But unless there is a second life after this one, you can't say for sure the Earth isn't randomly generated. Regardless, FTL and Rogue Legacy aren't roguelikes.
>>
Are there any "overhaul" like mods for Tome that makes the game much much longer? I love games like these but I hate the fact that the playthroughs are so short.
>>
>>343635027
Mostly people with autism. There are /vg/ threads for roguelikes /rlg/ and roguelites /lite/ no one calls them roguelikelikes.
>>
>>343635040
Why the fuck not? Because they're realtime? Because they're not on a grid? Because they have progression between games?
>>
>>343634679
It is offensive when someone likes absolute garbage and posts about it. It's not even subjective, it's a terrible game.
>>
>>343634842
>Earth is randomly generated
>No funky shit like massive chasms carving through mountains
>Spawn in the most boring location
>>
>>343635157
And the only reason for that split is autist purists who refuse to let anything in their genre but single-character tilebased turnbased dungeon crawlers with permadeath and a victory condition.

Oh wait, they allow DDA. They can't even follow their own rules.

End result: both threads are dead.

>>
>>343635392

>>
>>343635392
Why? Because the roguelike genre has set requirements for a game to be considered such and those games don't follow the requirements? Makes sense to me.
>>
>>343635292
While I do think that no tileset dungeon crawlers are significantly different than a dungeon crawler like Isaac, the fact that both threads are mostly dead is reason enough to combine them. Good luck convincing them of that though. Most vg threads are graveyards filled with memes and waifuposting tbqh.

But they're both FPS games. You can make up some retarded subcategory for FTL if you like, but then you also need a different one for Rogue Legacy and then a third one for Binding of Isaac/Gungeon type games.

Or you can contain the autism at let them all under the umbrella of roguelike games.
