this needs to be combined with the AXONskeleton to get true pacific rim feeling,

but its so early in the prototype stages, and looks so expensive, i doubt that it will reach any consumers in the next 10+ years.

it is basically built like a current military exoskeleton or "limb assist" as they call it, just for arms and legs., like the talos, or raytheon XOS 2 , hanging from a stationary base, supplying it with power and data. you can bet your ass this will be expensive as fuck. as ingenious this idea is, i cant think of any time frame shorter than 15 years to get this down below 5000$ AND available in any way

this looks ok, but the arms of the robot are just a stand-in for the player's real arms. the player should be manipulating controls that move the arms, not be the arms themselves. otherwise it's just redundant.

Considering this... Would developers have to make VR systems that cater to the disabled?

If I was 60 years old and loved video games, it wouldn't be fair for me to vs 20 year olds in a game we both love. What would be done about such a thing?

It's a shame you'll never be able to make a fun game out of it.

Not being able to have any locomotion in VR has killed before it even began. Static / teleport games are all that you can do and its garbage.

assistive limb exoskeleton., thats what the technology was originally aimed at before the military got a boner for it. aiding elderly and workers with walking and lifting, and moving around in general. but at 60 you arent really that old.

>>
>>343629403
It doesn't matter if you add pedals, any locomotion = motion sickness. Anyone who says they can sit in VR for more than half an hour with game-driven motion is a liar.

I have a Vive, thought racing games wouldn't be so bad, but they are.

wait, i play cockpit games for hours and i do not even get woozy. the static cockpit is what keeps you from getting motion sick. just finished 14 missions in house of the dying sun in one go, cockpit adds a lot. you just have to put a glass surface with dirt and scratches in front of the player to give him a point of reference. this is an established technique in vr games based on mechs and fighters, Vox Machinae was one of these games, sitting vr in a mech cockpit which was just awesome to play, because you had the cockpit around you as reference point the whole time.
>>
>>343629967
Shit, I forgot about this game. When's it coming out again? Sadly the demo got me a bit motion sick but it wasn't terrible otherwise. It would be cool to integrate motion controls for it.

Perhaps they are actually going to integrate motion controller support which would be why we haven't heard anything since then. That would be pretty cool. I could totally see it working with Touch (grab the in-game sticks with the grip buttons which if you haven't tried, they're really easy to use almost as if they weren't there), and maybe a bit less comfortably with the Vive and PSVR. I don't know if they're going to support other platforms though.

I can do anything in VR without the slightest hint of motion sickness or anything else negative. I can play a game that allows for full mouselook in addition to headtracking, be looking forward in reality and straight upward in the game, I can play fucking Chivalry with VorpX and get decapitated, watch as my camera spins uncontrollably as my head is rolling, and still be totally fine. You and your ilk have weak genes.
>>
>>343629541
So call me a liar, used my Vive for hrs in a row with 0 motion issues. In fact only a few games allow you try use game-driven motion and I wish more did. Try out the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, it is a beautiful env and uses traditional motion controls and it is great. You just sound like one of those people that get car sick too.
>>
>>343632418
>>343632038
These. I hate people who complain about motion sickness. Some call certain games crap just because of it. A pity they can't play wonderful games like these, but they probably also don't deserve it. Also you can train yourself to tolerate it, just takes some time and care.

Holy shit I could actually see that working.

I played Star Trek: Bridge Crew (the VR game) at E3 and the way you had different roles controlling different parts of the ship actually proved to work out pretty well. I'd love to see a mecha take on it.
>>
I used to be only skeptical. But lately I think it won't work like this. It'll need another technical advancement for it to gain advantage over just screens. Even then, it won't be games as we know them, it'll be a new form of media.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfYbgdo8e-8

Imagine a Vive game where two players operate one character as the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Each using a controller.

Left Brain player can't same faces and colours and Right can't see text or use the mic? I'm not sure. I just wonder how the headtracking could work without making the Right player sick.
>>
>>343634217
>you are two

You're one until somebody cuts the fibers
>>
>>343634610
Watch the video. They're saying that even with the corpus intact, the right side of the brain is thinking on it's own.
>>
I get motion sickness and even so, I STILL wish every FPS could get a VR (motion controller) port no matter how much movement it has. I don't care. HL2 was one of the best gaming experiences I've had. I want Halo. I want Counter Strike. I want FEAR. I want all of it.
>>
>>343611921
It's just Wii Sports Boxing ten years later.
>>
- Most players get sick from the slightest movement, in most games movement is a central mechanic.
- No way to limit body movement or head rotations (clipping through meshes) breaking immersion or gameplay.
- Requires very high-end hardware, it'll take years for the right stuff to become affordable as a leisure time expense.

All for turning your head around. I would go to the arcade for it and I think that would be a good fit. For games, it's a gimmick. For social applications, product visualization, architecture, interior design, sculpting etc. there are uses. I think the video game angle is just a ploy to gain investment and further develop the technology.

So do I, brother. Tridef worked marvelously, as far as injection drivers go, even managing to play nice with Skyrim, somehow avoiding the "huge arms" bug that the other injection drivers can't overcome. But that was with the DK1 and those cunts officially scrapped the project forever ago. Seriously pisses me off, as their solution was BY FAR the most flexible and reliable. VorpX works pretty well with a lot of things, and it's got some features that Tridef would certainly need if it was brought back from the dead (like the ability to detach your view from center screen and move your head to look all the way out to the corners of the virtual display), but it has its own problems like buggy image warping in ESO and Fallout 3 (plus a few other games that aren't coming to mind atm) and none of the "best guess" programming that let Tridef work with practically everything, new and old.

Vireio Perception recently got a huge overhaul (again) and right now only works with Fallout 4.

All that said, however, a lot of things do work acceptably well and are a total blast, even with the idiosyncrasies. DX1 in the DK1 was quite a treat, even with the hud only rendering on one eye and all the text being too goddamn small to read on the lower-resolution DK1 display.

Much to my aggravation, I just cannot get the HL2 VR mod (the one that lets you use the Razer Hydra) to fucking work. I want to play that so badly. I also need to play TF2 in real multiplayer with the DK2 and Hydra. Still think it's amazing that Valve went to the trouble to really support both technologies. I wonder if they've added support for the Vive controllers by now...

Sorry for rambling, I've been a chatty bitch all night.
>>
>>343636816
HL2 apparently works but only with the Vive right now since it uses extended mode. Not sure about TF2 but it's probably the same. No motion controller support. I don't think they actually did update it.

Oh, that last part, though. I'm not sure if you meant it how I'm reading it, but Valve did add Hydra support when they added the original Rift support to TF2. I've played it with the DK2 and the Hydra, and that's fucking amazing.

It was addressed way back with the DK2. I played it on fast fps games like quake 1 with no trouble what-so-ever.

The only times it can happen is if a game's vr support is done badly. HL2 is notorious for making people sick and I had to break from Alien isolation because of a section you see the space outside a window was spinning randomly.

Even just moving in a game, moving to your eyes while your inner ear says you're sitting still, can make some people insta-nauseous. It does happen and I won't deny that, I'm just saying those people are faggots and they're dragging the rest of us down with them.

Roomscale is nice and all, but it's pushed way too much and is the most gimmicky thing going right now. Games with free movement instead of boxes you can walk around inside and teleports everywhere are far superior for those of us who don't have the nausea problem.
