So what killed this game?

This. It's fun to return to with friends every now and then. But outside that there isn't much content, support or fans left for the game.
>>
>>343594027
This wasn't meant to go on for more than 5 years

TF was and succeeded

All good things come to a end

Remember when they said they'd keep adding content, specifically new characters, to L4D1? Remember when they said they had lots of new campaigns planned for L4D2?
>>
>>343594027
It was dead on arrival. The first game was superior in every way.
>>
>>343594838
This, unfortunately. The gun balance was perfect, maybe MAYBE the only lacking thing was the assault needing like 10 or 20 more bullets. The maps were better, the crew was much better, the tone was much better... The only thing that's better in 2 is VS. And that's arguable.
>>
>>343594027
TF2 died because it went F2P

trading was fun
>>
Didn't like 5 other hyped zombie games come out with a 3-year-timespan of l4d2 coming out?
>>
>>343594838
>>343595570
Also mutations and more visually appealing maps.
>>
>>343595570
>The only thing that's better in 2 is VS. And that's arguable.
2 was more intense, but depended on the map to determine who had the advantage.
1 was more fair, but didn't have much variety
>>
>>343595630
TF2 became a zombie when it went F2P, it was dead before that. For all the shit all the new free players got, at least most of them actually tried to play unlike tradefags.
>>
>>343594027
5 GUNS
LIKE 10 MAPS
GAME'S OLD AS FUCK
>>
>>343595826
lots of tradefags played the game

if anything they stopped when it went F2P and the average skill level hit the floor
>>
>>343595570

what about melee weapons?

and pushback cooldowns?
>>
I play this game competitively (Yes, there is a competitive scene) and since 2009 and got about ~9000 hours total.

What killed the game you ask...?

Lack of balance, no matchmaking, poor support from the developers, and a very toxic playerbase.

Certain weapons made rushing through maps on campaign/versus a breeze, and the deagle outshines every weapon in realism-mode even though it's a secondary.

No matchmaking doesn't encourage players to play with people of their own skill, resulting in new players being thrown to the wolves and getting votekicked for not playing properly. This lowers the player retention from sales quite a bit.

The developers aren't actively fixing game breaking exploits, glitch spots, hacks, or balancing the game whatsoever. Servers are also poorly maintained and generally go to shit every sale.

This is also the very-same community that had an automated server DDoS bot script. A group of players banded together using a VDS that connected to a search of all L4D2 Valve servers and would search for player's SteamIDs 24/7 and proceed to crash the server. This was around for years and covered up by Valve, where the only solution was to buy a new account.

Overall, the game is very buggy and shitty. The only other game I came across that was buggier is Tom Clancy's: The Division.

There were plenty of balance issues with versus, but co-op is fine.

TF2 is consistently in the top 15 most played games on steam at any given moment. Can't really say that for any other games released in 2007.

I can believe it. When L4D came it, it was literally the only game I played for over a year. Having something like Game Battles to organize players together helped alot, which I'm guess he did. Some games just grab people's interest, even if they got their share of problems.

You are fascinating. Please share your left 4 dead 2 wisdom with me.

What is your favorite map? favorite weapon? favorite survivor? What was your versus to campaign ratio split at?

Any tips or interesting facts about the game you'd like to share? Or just rants?

The most time I've seen played for any game was a guy who had 6,100+ hours in dota 2 about a year ago.

so it's closer to 7.5k hours

still man, that's crazy
>>
>>343595570
Also the first games segments didn't go on forever. Like it would be a 10-15 minute romp. You restock and go again. 2's segments took like 45 minutes each. I would get bored of seeing the same level for almost 4 hours.

only major complaint, was that spitter and jockey should have been deleted from the game.

Keep in mind that these times can be inflated by simply leaving the game running. I know many competitive players just leave the game on so they don't have to wait to play again.

>the only thing that remains is The Parish's slightly different graveyard maze each time you play
i think there's a source mod or something though that randomly changes shit up during the levels. never tried it though because i always saw source mods as this weird fucking entity since L4D already supported Add-Ons by default, yet you had to use some weird third party scripting shit to use this

Kinda answered your own question there.
If pushback was a problem that needed to be solved via cooldown, melee weapons shouldn't have come in and function in the EXACT same manner.

It's a glitch that was introduced we don't know when, but it never happened in the older years of 2009.

Essentially a Hunter/Jockey/Charger can use their "primary" ability (Pounce/Lunge/Charge) at a Witch while she's chasing a survivor, and then force her to change targets to a special infected because the Witch AI treats the SI as the attacker. What ended up happening was the Hunter became the Tank so the Witch retargeted the Hunter due to the pounce but then targeted the Tank because that's who pounced her.

There is a lot you don't know about the game, maybe try out my steam guide;
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=609108162

>>343598315
I guess you hate speedrunners too because they make singleplayer games competitive as well?
>>
>>343598443
The VDS DDoS bot script targeted private servers too. If you(your SteamID) was added to the list it didn't matter what server you went to as it would get attacked. A fix was found some years later, but not before years of damage was done by a group of malicious players.
>>
Is L4D3 coming, lads?
>>
>>343598471

If a game has any sort of PvP, it is going to have a "competitive scene". If you think the game is so easy... why not add me then and I can get you into a PUG;

https://steamcommunity.com/id/3yebex/
>>
>>343598665
Pretty much any multiplayer game that's popular enough will have a competitive scene, dumb summerposter.

Also, there's alot of tech in it you probably don't know about. Hunter mechanics alone can take tons of hours to get down, let alone stuff like surfing with boomers out of their spawn form.
>>
>>343598804
If you read the post I made above I said that Valve covered it up, pretty heavily. It's no secret amongst the veterans who did it (I talked to them years after the whole thing) and it's very real.

Unfortunately I can't find much proof, but here's an old thread on reddit;
https://www.reddit.com/r/l4d2/comments/1q8kms/constant_ddos_attacks/

Like I said, Valve sweeped it under the rug HARD. Dozens if not hundreds of people were targeted and forced to buy new steam accounts just so they could play L4D2.
>>
>>343598813
competitive scenes are cancer 99% of the time, every time I played them I did well, but there was no fun because everyone treated every match as if it was the end of the bloody world. when people flipped their shit over the slightest thing and when I was asked to do practice matches as prep, instead of being able to play when I want, I quit. Nothing against you, I don't doubt you are a good player, I just can't stand the competitive scenes anymore.

Depends who you play with. As long as you aren't dog-shit nobody is really going to care. However you can't expect a expert mechanic to not get upset over the newbie because the guy can't even change a tire.

I actually ran into Natural Selection 2 competitive years ago and it was by far the most friendly and enjoyable competitive scene out there. Just unfortunate the skill-curve was ridiculous and turned people off till the game died.

Another post (by me) regarding the "DOS" script.

https://www.l4dnation.com/general-discussion/dos-(/msg26691/#msg26691

Like I said, it was very real and if you were a competitive player in L4D2 and pissed off anyone who were friends with the group of people (Trash talking, playing in pubs and being good, votekicking people) you were added to the list permanently.
>>
>>343599342
it's not me being the newbie, it's people who just overreact at every little thing, like even when we win these people would still be angry about shit hours or even days after it happened. I just never cared enough, I play the games, i'm good at them, I don't bog my sanity down with people who treat the game like it's life or death.
It's fine if you like it, and I know there are good people, but i'm just not willing to wade through shit to get there.

and yeah NS2 was fun, but the servers I played on all treated new players like dogshit, so surprise surprise they died pretty quickly.

Ignore all this speculative shit. I played both games and followed them closely.

L4D2's problem was that it was a $60 DLC. It came out 1 fucking year after the first one. L4D3 itself was LITERALLY ADVERTISED to have all the things 2 introduced delivered as free DLC. It was the period of the TF2 honeymoon. When Valve was putting free updates out for TF2 like crazy. They wanted to keep interest and fame for L4D by doing the same for it. But after a few months they decided they'd jew out on people instead. This really killed a lot of people's interest, leading to TONS of people staying with L4D1 either on principal or financial reasons due to not wanting to spend another $60 on a sequel just one year after the first. Community was abysmal on 2. A mere two months after release you already couldn't find lobbies for Hard Rain or Swamp and very soon most of the game became deserted.

In short, broken promises and fractured community killed L4D2.
