I'm fine with the animations and sprites. The colors are garish though. Famicom had shit colors. The next gen is when colors got great.

Yeah the NES had a limited palette and a lot of games looked ugly because of it. Yeah, a LOT of indie games are ugly as sin and are shitty in more ways than just that.

But Shovel Knight looked nice.

Budgets are basically the same now. Shovel Knight cost a few hundred thousand. That's about par for a standard snes game. The bigger ones cost several million. Average ps1 game was 3-5 million. PS2 was 7-10 million.

More complexity = more time and people needed.
