It has a slow beginning (up until you get to the mansion at the start). I initially gave up on it because I wasn't feeling it.
I pushed through it, and had an amazing time (about 50 hours, though I took my time). It's a great game.

Breath of Fire one two and three were the pinnacle in JPG goodness before it all became about waifus and titties. It's like the cool cousin to Chrono Trigger that's fun to be around even though you're best pals with Chrono Trigger. There's no way to have a bad time playing the BoF. Unless it's that last one on PS2. Also the desert. Fuck the desert.

BoF3 is fucking fantastic and arguably the best in the series.
Definitely worth playing and comfy as fuck. Honestly there aren't many other JRPGs that capture the feel BoF3 has. It has some excellent character driven sections, a fantastic mixture of depressing and upbeat and cheery moods, and and overall fantastic world. Honestly the weakest part of the game is that you don't get to see more of the world, well that and the desert.
