>I don't want to write for games.
Then why are you even in this thread?

>>343578887
Then why aren't you building game engines? Tons of creative people would like someone capable of programming on their team. It's the programmers dropping out of projects that always lead to disaster. And half the time, they drop out because they get in over their head.

>Then why aren't you building game engines?

I sort of do, I get about 50% of the requirements I want out of them done and then give up because I realize the ideas suck or just feel unfun and then let them rot in whatever repository I used. With no team I have no ideas to bounce off and even if I do its hard to see those ideas come to life with just shapes and blips

I just stick to my decent paying normalfag career

So learn to use gamemaker then. The knowledge won't come to you buy sitting around and thinking about it.
Make a decent demo. Find a music freelance guy.(they're everywhere) use his song to make an appeal video, then kickstart the game and pay for more music.

Your pixel art can be shit if the music and game are both good.

Maybe hang around more creative people, and less programmers? There's a ton of creative people just hoping and praying some rogue programmer will offer his service. Or, if you want to really make your own idea come to life, I'm sure you can find rogue artists out there too. A lot of artists just want to be a part of something successful. Go impress them with your half baked builds, and they'll glom on.
>>
>>343580019
Learning programming, especially in an environment like GameMaker, really isn't that hard. When you get right down to it all of programming is learning to assign values to things, comparing those values, and then getting the program to decide what to do next based on those values.

Sure, Drawing Programming and Composing music.
I just don't have discipline, if i Invest all my free time on it i'm sure that i would be fucking amazing right now.
But there's nothing that makes me want to "do it"
There's no motivation, maybe it's because of all the time that you have to invest but i just don't enjoy drawing or playing guitar, for me is more like a tedious obligation instead of a Joyful Hobby.

I'm working on a sci-fi novel about a guy getting tracked down by his old organization after he violently defected. The story bounces between flashbacks and present day. Very character driven, some spooky stuff.

Its the first part of a series, but each book has a significant gap between them and a different POV. With the final story piecing them all together.

The first draft is more or less done, ding some serious edits now.

What about you?

It'd be incredible as a first person game, journeying outside your territory to figure out why the water has run out, a bit like Alien Isolation or System Shock 2. But more feasibly it could be a simple RPG where you assign jobs to your survivors.

>>
>>343587457
What >>343587605 says is mostly what I meant.

They're nice people, but when it comes to ideas as long as they get their one or two ideas they don't care about anything else and just "go with the flow". I don't want to use the term as a derogative, but they're really "beta" and its hard to bounce ideas back and forth like that. In small groups, even one of these kinds of people is a huge setback.

>>343587643
contrarian? I've worked with /v/, and this is usually the case. I understand how projects succeed and fail and the people who find on /v/ are mostly the type to lead a project into the fail category. Its not just me, most everyone that's worked with /v/ usually has negative experiences, its why you rarely find any successful /v/ projects where as other boards usually comes out with at least one or two successful projects.

I'm not be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, I've tried it, it doesn't work, I don't want to wast 2-6 months on another failed group, its obvious to almost everybody that's attempted in the past that if you have a vidya project that you want to succeed, don't base your recruitment on /v/

>Centering the potential of your ideas on what a shitty website things
This is fucking /v/ we're talking about, they hate just about everything. If it's triple A, it's shilled and if it's indie, it's pixelshit.
Just do your best to create something that you believe is good.
>>
>>343588790
/v/ shits on good games because they're popular. Fuck /v/ it's opinion is worthless.

Are you nonmetaphorically autistic? /v/ hates everything, and it likes everything. It's a collective of people, so unless it's reviled by every type of person, it has an audience.
>>
>>343589016
What kind of writing work do you do?

It really looks like this isn't what I'm looking for. I looked at a forum post where someone asked if they could make one and it's not easy to do. I'll stick with Quest for Text Adenture but I might use Twine for stories as well.

Quest is good for it but my problem with it is that I can't save my game as an exe and if it's a long game the UI gets bloated with no way to expand or reduce things you're looking at so you just end up with a huge line of stuff and it's hard to look at. But doable.

Protip

Treat /v/ has the HUMONGUS PILE OF SHIT that will be the fertilizer for your getting good.

You dont eat shit, you dont keep it in your house, but you SURE AS HELL will use it to make that really cool garden

Treat /v/ as a platform to eventually branch out from, thats all it ever can be

I'm pretty confident in my art skills and I'm learning to program but I've never felt like a very creative person.
Is creativity something you can improve?

me too friend
>>
>>343589621
Watch and consume media that you like and other art that you're into and if you get inspired or ideas then that's creativity. If you don't get that then you're not. I doubt you can teach it.
>>
>>343589492
Cool, good luck dude! Hopefully you find what you need.
>>
>>343588790
I was worried about the same thing, but listen. Make that game for you and no one else. It's impossible to please everyone, so be selfish and please yourself. Make the game that YOU want. Make what your heart desires. Pour your heart and soul into it and be proud of your creation no matter what anyone says.

Why are you even here?

If you didn't cared about what /v/ thinks you wouldn't even be posting.
>>
>>343589621
Yes, most creative people in history are successful only after a lot of failure, and even then their creativity isn't recognized until after they're dead. Just keep at it, fail, learn from it, and try again.

some people are lucky and get it right the first time
>>
>>343589996
/v/ is a fun place to talk to people and maybe you'll get some good threads out of it amidst the shitposting but it's clear if you've been here for any length of time this place is worthless when it comes to opinion.
>>
Anyone have that "fetish game" idea someone posted in one of these threads?
>>
>>343589996
You can be part of a "community" while also understanding its faults.

A lot of people here are negative and shit on things for the hell of it. Because of the nature of this site it can be impossible to tell if the person is genuine or not. ignoring feedback from this site is generally a good idea.

The real reason is because 90% of the people on /v/ (myself included) have no talent but like shitting on people anyways

Search your feelings, you know it to be true
>>
>>343590506
Looks cool! Got a blog?
>>
>>343590526
Search my feelings? It's not as if you're saying something that's difficult to come to terms with. It's a very obvious observation.

My game idea is basically an RPG minesweeper clone with some MMBN thrown in.

I even drew out the what the first and second phase of the final boss look like (pic related phase 1), and made a battle theme for the first phase (https://soundcloud.com/iwilldevouryourkittens/the-great-four-armed-general)

Can someone please collaborate with me on this

>Want to start seriously working on my game but there are a lot of things which are preventing me from doing so
This fucking sucks. I really want to work on it while I still have a lot of free time and motivation too but everything is out of my control.
>>
>>343590585
It would be cool but I worry the advertising wouldn't be worth the time it'd take to make the blog.

Freelance. Mostly marketing writing, but also ghostwriting some books, doing resumes and CVs, and magazine articles.

Frankly I hate it most of the time. I thought writing for a living would be awesome but it turns out that 90% of the time you're writing stupid bullshit you don't care about for self important assholes who see you as nothing more than labor and only value the time it takes to write and not the skill of writing.

On the occasion you do enjoy something, it almost always gets chopped to bits by the client who thinks they need to make a thousand changes to everything in order to prove that they're better than you at the thing you do for a living. Which, by the way, makes every project take twice as long as it should as you trudge through a dozen revisions.

It's like being a race car driver forced to drive a limo for some spoiled rich girl who can't stop backseat driving.

It's easy to get into, there are always jobs, but expect to make lower than minimum wage at first until you find a client who actually values you

I'm thinking of changing careers.
>>
>>343591926
I guess you should lurk more then.

The Unity tutorials are actually really, really good for starting out learning how to code. Lots of practical application.

Unity is a fine engine. You can do pretty much anything in it.
