How much do you enjoy the following, on a scale from 1 to 10:
- fighting random battles
- fighting boss battles
- exploring the overworld
- exploring dungeons
- ransacking towns
- viewing cutscenes
>>
>>343577414

>fighting random battles
1. I've never liked random battles, even back in the 90s I never liked them.
>fighting boss battles
10
>exploring the overworld
If it's interesting, 10. Otherwise, a much lower score.
>exploring dungeons
10, as long as they're designed well.
>ransacking towns
8
>viewing cutscenes
There's too many variables for this one. In general it's fine unless there's too many and/or they're too long, unless they're the best part of the game.

>- fighting random battles
5/10 in other series, 10/10 in Dragon Quest

- fighting boss battles
6/10, bosses aren't really necessary to me. But they work to show an obvious end to a story arc or dungeon.

>- exploring the overworld
20/10, this is why DQVIII is my favorite game in all of gaming.

>- exploring dungeons
8/10, along as as they're done well, they are some of the more enjoyable parts of an RPG.

>- ransacking towns
1/10 in most games, 10/10 in Dragon Quest.

>- viewing cutscenes
3/10, very few games do it right. And most games that don't do it don't really lose anything in the immersion or story.

>5/10 in other series, 10/10 in Dragon Quest
What makes random battles in Dragon Quest special?
Same with ransacking towns.
>>
>>343579546

>What makes random battles in Dragon Quest special?
THe DQ team spends a lot of time playtesting and tweaking EXP rates to make sure areas have a good balance. This is because in Dragon Quest II, there was some massive balancing issues. So Yuji Horii has vowed since then to never rush a game to release until after everything has been playtested by himself personally.

Aside from EXP rates and flow, the game also gives you a dozen different ways to lower or avoid battles, as well as skills to trigger battles when you want. Zoom, Evac and Whistle are basically the best tools I've ever seen in a random encounter game. And really should have been in all games by the SNES. Yet its 2016 and we still have most series not utilizing them.

>Same with ransacking towns.
There's just 100x more stuff to find in DQ towns than most other RPGs. There's more items to find in just the starting town of DQVIII than an entire game like FFVI. But along with having tons of stuff to find, its also been balanced well. You get items you need for the next dungeon (like a free pot lid for a shield) and some items you probably won't even need for 20 hours (such as an alchemy item like Orichalcum). But the point is, you are rewarded for exploring. Whereas you can search all of South Figaro in FFVI and only come up with 2 potions and an elixir out of hundreds of objects.
>>
>>343580284

>the game also gives you a dozen different ways to lower or avoid battles

Which I can almost never do because I feel like I'm cheating myself out of EXP and money.

>Zoom, Evac and Whistle are basically the best tools I've ever seen in a random encounter game. And really should have been in all games by the SNES. Yet its 2016 and we still have most series not utilizing them.

I agree with that. Playing other RPGs after Dragon Quest was kind of annoying due to not having fast ways out of dungeons. Final Fantasy used to, but they got rid of that in the mid-late 90s.
>>
>>343580724

And even then, FF only had Teleport. But no zoom option. Took them until fucking FFXII to have a way to warp across the world. And it was still limited to just crystal points.
>>
>>343580284
Thanks for the thorough explanation. Strangely, I've actually had a hard time trying to figure out how to approach Dragon Quest's random battles. In VIII for example, I think the most time-efficient strategy is to use padfoot/holy water to reduce the encounter rate, run from most battles, and to whistle like crazy whenever metal slimes might show up. But if I take that approach, what's stopping me from grinding past the "right" level and then breezing through the next dungeons? Or even if I don't fight metal slimes, whenever I get to a boss I think I could beat, unless I've committed to avoiding random battles altogether then I feel like I should level up a bit to save items and real time in the boss fight. And that ends up ruining said boss fight.
In some RPGs I can just skip all random battles, but random battles are just so crucial to Dragon Quest that I can't ignore them entirely. I realize this is an incredibly autistic / OCD sort of issue, but I think I'd enjoy Dragon Quest games more if I could just figure out a concrete rule for dealing with random battles. Can anyone suggest a solution?
>>
>>343582282

>Can anyone suggest a solution?

Play the 3DS version, kill metal monsters now and then, avoid other encounters. Other than that, no, I think your autism is too powerful.

DQVIII is one of the best balanced games out there. If you just fight what enemies you naturally encounter, you should be at the right level. And if you explore all the optional areas, you'll be more powerful than you need to be. Not only because of extra levels, but all the free gear and alchemy items you get.

If you still can't stand to fight stuff, then the game just probably isn't for you. Though I will point out that DQVIII has one of the lowest encounter rates for an RPG out there, if not the lowest. So if you can't stand DQVIII, you probably won't get through any other JRPGs. Try playing Final Fantasy IV or Pokemon Red/Blue sometime. Battles every 1-2 steps.
>>
>>343583459

>Though I will point out that DQVIII has one of the lowest encounter rates for an RPG out there

This is another reason I'd like to play the PS2 version someday, people say it's random battles done right, and that's kind of hard to comprehend. Still sucks that you get into random battles on the... I forgot what it's called, the big cat you can ride. In the 3DS version it's easy to avoid enemies while on it.

Use status effects on enemies that are susceptible to them, they're much more reliable in DQ than in most other series. Even Thwack will kill half of an enemy group pretty reliably if they aren't immune.

Use Boomerangs, Whips, and AoE abilities to speed this up further.

This. I cannot stress enough how fighting in DQ games is not about dealing the most damage, but dealing damage in a smart way. In effect, fighting in a DQ game is about doing things in the least amount of turns. So hitting all enemies for only 40 damage with a boomerang will still be faster than hitting one enemy at a time for 100 damage.

The 'strategy' in DQ game is about how to mitigate turns. In other words, play smarter, not harder. And nearly everyone I see who seems to dislike the games follows the harder route.

I (think I) know how to win random battles as efficiently as possible (e.g. in 8 use boomerangs, thin air, whips, re-usable items like timbrel of tension, etc). But running is an even more efficient way to end random battles in one turn. It also keeps your team in better shape for boss fights. If you decide that you will fight random battles, then the "smart strategy" is to only fight metal slimes.

But while that may be more efficient, perhaps a more fun way to play is to ignore the smart strategy, fight random battles, and avoid metal slimes.
>>
>>343589496
Running is stupid because DQ is generally pretty balanced and if you fight all the battles you run into while exploring normally, you'll be at the perfect level to deal with whatever shit the game throws at you.

The only time you should be spamming shit like Holy Water/Padfoot/etc is if you're going back through an area you've already been to before to unlock a chest you couldn't open earlier or some shit like that.

There's so many ways to return back to town or get your MP back in battle, I don't see where you are running into problems. And its not like a sign of weakness to go back to town and heal. They give you the evac and zoom skills for a reason. Some of the hardest parts of the series are Rhone in DQII or Orochi's dungeon in DQIII. And its perfectly fine to leave those areas, heal, and then come back.

The only time you can't leave in a DQ game is the Jail/Dharma Temple in DQVII. Which is why its so hard.

>>343589496

Fighting everything you encounter and metal slimes is more efficient. You might be able to beat the regular game by avoiding battles, but probably not the end game boss.

>>343589478

I can't even tell where to go half the time because nothing I'm doing is connected to what I'm going to be doing. This is probably DQVI's biggest flaw: there's no real main villain to lead you along after Murdaw. In most other DQ games you're chasing the villain or a villain, in VI you just roam around fighting evil. It feels really directionless.
>>
>>343590609

Yeah I know what you mean. I don't play DQ for its story, and the earlier games didn't bother me, but DQ VI's plot was really bad to me for some reason. As you said, like, a quarter of the way into the game (or a third or something) you're literally told to find yourself, and that's how it stays until the last third of the game when everyone suddenly starts talking about a new Dark Lord all of a sudden like they've all known about him before.

Maribelle. Pretty sure I spelled that right. Anyway, party member in DQ VII and probably important to the plot.
>>

Early in the game you go on a mini adventure with one of the eventual waifu choices
Way later when you're looking for a magical thingy, you go to a town where a rich guy owns said ancient shit and he's having a test to see who's worthy of marrying his daughter, with a bonus magical thingy thrown in free of charge (in the DS version he has another daughter that's also an option).

On your adventure to prove you're worthy to marry the rich dude's daughter, you run into Waifu #1 and she tags along. After completing your quest it turns out that rich dude is a massive bro and offers to pay for your wedding and give you the magical thingy no matter who you marry, then you pick your waifu.

DQVI had the same core team (Armor Project) behind it. Meaning, Yuji Horii wrote the story and laid out the games 'scenario' (pacing and development).

I honestly don't know why VI feels so hallow compared to the rest of the series however. And Yuji Horii seems to never talk about VI in interviews. Perhaps Yuji Horii had his hands full also working on Chrono Trigger. But that's just a theory.

>>343590316

DQVI had fine character designs. Except maybe Hassan who is way too DBZ. But some people like that.

In terms of unique design however, DQVI has some of the more unique looking stuff in the series. There was an anime that came out about 5 years ago where the girl looked exactly like Barbara. Same exact hair, eyes and everything. But I haven't seen anyone else use this style of hair.
>>
>>343591309

You just pick one and then marry them, no dating elements. They have different stats and they have a slightly different spell set, that's all mechanically. Whom you marry effects the hair color of your children and the dialogue. That's about it really other some bonus money if you choose to marry Nera or Deborah.

It's done pretty poorly in my opinion, none of the girls are really developed and basically are very basic stereotypes like "sweet and cute" or "mean but secretly nice". Bianca is basically forced on you too. All you do is choose which wife you want, that's it. Also as party members they're ok, not super terrible but your children and monsters are WAY better.

A lot of Japanese names are pretty plain actually. Interesting as the language can be, it's also pretty dry at times. Like, they like to use "Makai" (literally, demon world, but it can be translated other ways to, Ma isn't always demon) for most evil worlds it seems.

The first one's kind of grindy and simple. I'd recommend IV to start, it's a great game.
>>
>>343594509
Changes to phrasing that ultimately mean the same thing are fine and to be expected, otherwise Japanese -> English would be full of run on sentences and borderline yoda-speak, the problem is when things like character names or dialogue gets completely rewritten for no reason.
>>
>>343594203

Its also because some things don't translate well. 'Aniki' being translated as 'Bro' makes me cringe every time. Its normal Japanese speech that doesn't have an equivalency in English.

>>343594597

Play the roms. They actually have better translations and less bugs. Even if you don't care about the crazy dialects, the android versions crash on many systems. And its not worth paying them for a bad port. Just like its not worth buying a lot of the FF ports on Steam which run worse than the original games.
>>
>>343594771

> the problem is when things like character names or dialogue gets completely rewritten for no reason.

Yeah, that shit's inexcusable. There are times where name changes are perfectly reasonable, but most of the changes in DQ are anything but that. Plus Alpha told me before that Meena and Maya are actual Indian names, so that's why they changed them from Minea and Manya, but that doesn't really fly since it takes place in a fantasy world, and there are already characters with crazy names like Balzack.

What do you think the best skill point distribution for DQVIII is?
Here's my general plan for when I play the 3ds version:
Hero: A bit of courage for zoom, [possibly some point in boomerangs?], then swords until the attack boost, then more courage.
Yangus: Some humanity for heal and other utility skills, fisticuffs for padfoot and thin air, then the rest in axes
Jessica: 3 staves for accelerate, some sex appeal for charm, more staves, then whips
Angelo: Doesn't really matter, he's usually healing or using items for me. I guess staves then swords would be best.

Are spears any good for hero or bows worth using for Angelo?
>>
>>343596540

Spears are great for metal monsters killing and putting the hurt on bosses.
>>
>>343596540
Do not put points in any other weapons than the one type you plan on using.
>>
>>343596540
>Are spears any good for hero or bows worth using for Angelo?
They both work very well for them. Spears in particular work very well for hero since they hit hard and make metal slime hunting much easier
>>
>>343596540
>Hero
Courage for Squelch + Zoom -> Swords -> Courage -> Spears

You can dump a few points in Spears early for Metal Slime hunting if you want, but Falcon Blade + Metal Slash gets the job done almost as well while still progressing towards shit you want. Putting points in Boomerangs is useless since they already do their job just fine by default.

>Yangus
Axes for Helm Splitter -> Humanity for Padfoot -> Fisticuffs for Thin Air -> Max Axes and Humanity

Self explanatory, Clubs and Scythes suck.

>Jessica
Whips until Twin Dragon Lash -> Staves until Magic Barrier -> Whips until the last Attack boost -> Fisticuffs for the Evasion boost

Sex Appeal isn't really worth it, Charm Attack doesn't go off anywhere near as often as the wiki says it does at least, and Hustle Dance is way too late to be useful since you'll just have a Sage Stone or two for endgame. Puff Puff is amusing but Kasnooze already gets the job done. Daggers just plain suck.

>Angelo
Staff until Bounce -> Bow until Shining Shot -> Fisticuffs until Evasion Up -> Staves until Oomph -> Swords until Metal Slash, and Charisma until Divine Intervention

Bow is way better as his main weapon because Seraph Shot is infinite free MP. The rest is focusing on utility.

- exploring the overworld

1/10 ranges from boring to annoying walking/sailing far away only to find out you need a key or other item to advance, even worst when there is nothing and you just wasted your time.

- exploring dungeons

8/10 fun to get treasures and figure out the maze

- ransacking towns

7/10 interesting but not the reason i play DQ

- viewing cutscenes

Because.

>Bow is way better as his main weapon because Seraph Shot is infinite free MP.
Going Bows for Angelo seems to be common advice but in my experience it's a weak half-measure between the damage of Swords and the incredible freedom of Staves. I like full Staves (+ Charisma) because by the time Angelo gets MP recovery (free MP every single round) stacked on top of +70mp, you basically learn to ignore his MP and cast anything you feel like. Heals, Oomph, Kaswoosh, Thwack, Kabuff, whatever you like all damn day long. It's fantastic.
>>
>>343601264
Shining Shot is fucking fantastic, and as long as you're spamming Seraph Shot on turns where he doesn't have to cast anything it's more effective than MP Regen by endgame since it's based on the damage done with the attack. With his best bow that means you're getting like 15 MP back a shot.

You could keep going down Staves instead of touching Charisma at all if you want, you already go most of the way into Staves by the time you get Oomph. Squelch and Divine Intervention are pretty much the only useful abilities there. Ban Dance and Chilling Chuckle are absurdly situational (Are there even any bosses that dance? There's barely any that Psyche Up) and Pearly Gates is redundant as fuck once you have Shining Shot.

Swords are useless for everything but Metal Hunting since Angelo's not around to do damage

Play the Super Famicom versions for better resolution and cleaner interface. And don't feel bad about using a guide to find the seals in DQII. That's about it. The rest is pretty simple. Level if enemies are too strong and talk to every NPC.
>>
>>343601857
He gets Cherub's Arrow at 18 points into Bows dude. It upgrades to Seraph's Arrow at 66. Staff doesn't get MP Recovery until 100 Points, although it does get Drain Magic at 12 points not everything has MP to drain. The +50 MP isn't super useful either since you lose it as soon as you switch to a different weapon, and Angelo's MP is already naturally really high.

Swords don't help Angelo in his support role in any way, give him a good bow and load his inventory with staves to cover a few spells he doesn't have and you're golden.

I'm saying he gets so much MP just with base levels, he doesn't need to use bows or staves. I only put 32 points into staves to get one good spell and max out swords. By level 45 (end game), I already had 500+ MP on him. And even in the early game, I never ran out of MP. Mostly because I used items rather than heal. And rarely needed multiheal since my characters had good gear.

Needing to use MP draw skills might be good for playing the game the first time. But when min/maxing in a second playthrough, bows and staves are not as good as damage. The real problem with Angelo is his only group damage comes from spells. So for 3/4 the game, you're spamming Woosh. I would have been better if he could use boomerangs instead of the hero.

Jessica actually seems to be pretty ignorant. She gets confused by almost every guy who hits on her, doesn't even realize the kids in her own town like her and her party chat responses to multiple story events boil down to 'why do people do stupid things when they're in love?'

She seems like a pretty average teenage female. She might realize that guys find her attractive. But she doesn't know how or care to use it. She's really not as developed as a character as the other party members as well. Hell, I'd say Red has more development than she does. Back before she was playable.

Any nip speakers still here? Was wondering if someone could explain わけありの女, I looked it up, but don't quite understand it. It seems like "More to me than meets the eye"?

Fisticuffs for the Evasion bonus on Angelo and Jessica is really fucking important for the Dragovian Sanctuary

With Dancer's Mail and Phantom Mask, Angelo becomes pretty much immune to physical attacks
>>
>>343609012
I heard somewhere that the evasion bonus skill doesn't actually work.

But that reminds me, Hero (and Angelo since he doesn't have much else to do with skill points) could put points in fisticuffs for Defending Champion.

>I heard somewhere that the evasion bonus skill doesn't actually work.
They definitely, definitely work. You just have to unequip your weapons for it to kick in since it's Fisticuffs only, like the weapon specific attack bonuses. Which is fine since Angelo and Jessica spend a lot of turns in boss fights just casting spells anyways.
>>
>>343609405
Defending Champion is alright, I got it on my first run but never had much of a reason to use it. On later replays I just maxed out Swords -> Courage -> Spears first on Hero before I did anything with Fisticuffs on him.

Then why wasn't it Mari and Nara?

in this case it means the woman has special circumstances (your interpretation fits as well)

Came here just to post this.

Robert Murrow if you're here you're the savior of the GOP and you are my role model.

Anyone thoughts on heroes? Is it worth?
>>
>>343610243
Enjoyable gameplay, lots of series fanservice

side quest system sucks and the tower defense missions may or may not be your cup of tea

I'd say worth it all in all
>>
>>343610243

It caters entirely to fans of the series. If you played the past DQ games, you'll love all the monster and character references. If not, then it'll just seem like a weak musou.
>>
>>343610243
Eh, it's solid enough. I got about 50 hours out of it.

Just waiting for DQ 11, even learned nip so I can play it when it releases.

Navel piercings are some of the hottest things ever. Doubly so for something cute like a heart or star.
>>
>>343613450
They sure are. I've never seen a triple stud like that before, very hot.

Nobody will ever have as much horseporn as Bianca.

Makes me glad to be Florafag.

There's so many different ways to do piercings, it's hard to find them done the same way often if it's not common styles.
>>
>>343613450
>>343612769
I love them she doesn't seem like the type of girl to get one desu
>>
>>343614150
Of course, even the basic ring or stud is amazing.

>>343614314
I think the implication in that pic is that she was forcefully pierced, I don't think it was consensual.

Yeah, and she got that bull-head tat by her own choice too.
>>343614420
Not as big a fan of putting a ring on the navel. One with a little dangle is perfection on the belly button. And a little nose ring does funny things to me.
>>
Which Dragon Quest is the best? Where do I start?
>>
>>343614734
I like the ones with small chains that dangle a bit too. Especially when the girl leans over a bit and the chains hang down. Such a delicious sight.
>>
>>343614975
IV or V. They're quintessential Dragon Quest. Play the DS remakes if you can.

I'd love to see a pic of that, but it must be a rare thing to draw them hanging while she leans, since I've seen none. I'd love to post some other piercings, but blue boards.

- fighting random battles
5, it is so ingrained into rpgs there is no changing it really
- fighting boss battles
8
- exploring the overworld
9, depending on how open it is
- exploring dungeons
- ransacking towns
Almost never happens in rpgs, but a 10
- viewing cutscenes
4, they can be good depending on length
>>
>>343615296
Yeah it's usually in 3D stuff. I haven't seen it drawn at all. Oh well. The world of piercings is amazingly deep.

It's official, I think I love DQ series now
>>
>>343615483
I fucked it,

>Exploring dungeons
Can be a 10, I really like tower type dungeons, but am indifferent to cave dungeons in dq

What, the grandson of the Dragon Lord?
Pree chill compared to his grandfather
>>
>>343609479
>Which is fine since Angelo and Jessica spend a lot of turns in boss fights just casting spells anyways.
That's bullshit. Twin Dragon Slash >>>>>> anything else

Bow >>> Anything else Angelo can use.

Those are pretty much the canon weapons for both of them as well.
>>
What's the best Dragon Quest to start playing as someone who never touched the series? Is there any similarities to chrono trigger apart from the artstyle?
>>
>>343616131
IV or V, and no not really
>>
>>343615509
Sometimes I wish the nips weren't so obsessed with overly/unrealistically pure girls in their games. It would be fantastic to have a character that canonically has a piercing on the team.
>>
>>343615509
You're only limited by whatever space you have on someone's body.
>>
>>343616258
Totally agree. Even mainstream series like Final Fantasy rarely do it, so there's not much hope.

>>343616427
Yup. I even like tongue piercings.

Never been into tongue piercings quite as much. You never get to see it as much, and I can't help but think how annoying it would be eating or kissing, etc. If I was aiming for the mouth, I'd rather see one of those under lip ones.
>>
>>343617186
I just like tongue piercings because of the imagery of the girl sticking out her tongue with a nice juicy stud in there. My favorite still has to be navel piercings though.
>>
>>343612957

Sounds hot for sure. I can learn to like new things. Navel is like, the ubiquitous piercing spot.
