who /industry/ here?
I work for an MMO publishing company in operations, ask me simple questions
Do you get food when you work?
>>343565819
Yeah, catered lunches every day, and a bunch of snacks if I want. It's pretty nice.
Is it NCsoft?
>>343566004
No.Luckily.
>>343566107
Who do you work for?
>>343566325
I'm not going to say that, but you can probably figure it out via clues. The first is that NCSoft was a viable option for me to work for, since I live in the area.
>>343565291
you have any proof?
i actually work at nintendo and part time at sony/microsoft
>>343566574
I could post my badges for work, but I'm not sure I want to do that yet, especially since this thread was mainly for industry work and not I'VE GOT A HUGE LEAK I WORK FOR NINTENDO kind of stuff.
>>343565291
Isn't it boring dealing with the distribution stuff instead of actually making games?
I'm going to work for the people who fund the expos at Barclays during SF tournaments.
It's going to be amazing, you'll all see.
Are we really gonna have to 20 questions this shit?
Fine then.
Are you in Texas?

No, actually, it's pretty great. I do something I like to do, and I get to do it for a product I like. It's a childhood dream.
And technically, I DO help make games. I'm actually helping set up a few games right now, working directly with the netcode and quality of servers. My job is to make sure your game plays well, and while I might not be designing characters or making music or something like that, I'm not sure I'm capable (or want) to do ANY of those.
I've actually done a game pitch before for one of our publishing companies, and it is WAY, WAY more difficult than you think.
>>343566878
No. Look above.
>>343566543
nexon?
Proof or get the fuck out
>>343567414
Potentially.

>You will never win a wish and get to impregnate Viv
Would like to work on game servers/networking, seems cool. In house servers or do you use AWS/Azure?
I recently saw that Blizzard is using both their own hardware and they spin up AWS servers as needed.
Login servers and that stuff would probably fit as AWS and the game servers in owned hardware?
Is the servers/network crazy 20+ core machines with 512GB - 1TB RAM + SSDs, 10Gbit dual/quad NICs or is it more normal?
Do you have a degree/certs? I have an associates in IT but no certs.

>>343565291
how does it feel?
Do you work at Bungie and really think Destiny is an MMO?
>>343567874
Yeah, it's really fucking interesting stuff.
A majority of our backend is Red Hat based baremetal servers, but we're also looking into certain cloud solutions for parts of our games. Google's cloud services are REALLY fucking great, especially in relation to bandwidth, check them out sometime.
For game servers, we mainly use Microsoft servers. Unreal REQUIRES Microsoft, but I've come to appreciate just how nice having a GUI is sometimes.
For servers, it's fucking insane. We have something like 800 servers, either Dell R610s or 620s, each of them with dual CPUs and 96 GB of RAM, each simply hosting maps and DBs for players to play on. Only key servers require 10gig fiber, though, most game servers easily get by on standard cat5.
No, I do not have any degrees or certs. I'm a comp sci minorwith a BA in journalism, if you can fucking believe itwho worked his way up the ladder. I started out in IT building my own computers, and I think if you want to get into it, do it. Work your way up. Game companies are always looking for young people that want to learn and grow with them.

really fucking good mang

No, and I think the term "MMO" is beginning to lose it's impact. Technically, Destiny is an MMO, but it really doesn't feel like it; and with the introduction of more instance-based gameplay, it'll be less and less "MM" and more "O".
