That's how I see things as well. Both the Shades and Replicants had their part in escalating the war between each other (Nier killed innocent Shades near the start of the game, and the Shades sent that Dark Colossus to attack Nier's village). The only real victor in this story is the Queen Beast that caused the whole apocalypse to being with.

I do agree Drakengard 1 is edgy as fuck, with 4 out of 5 endings being apocalyptic clusterfucks.I actually like Drakengard for being so utterly bleak and grimdark, because it's kind of refreshing to have a JRPG not being overly optimistic and "POWER OF FRIENDSHIP".I would say that Nier toned things down quite a lot though, and it's more "melancholic" than anything else.

The Replicants in the Aerie managed to be peaceful with the Shades, so they merged into one. Technically, the people in the Aerie are the only complete humans in the game, apart from the prologue, andYonah's two selves merging for a short while at the end of the game.

Well the original idea was for Replicants to essentially be flesh-and-blood android-like constructs with no mind of their own, existing only as 1) soldiers to fight the Legions without spreading the white chlorination syndrome further, and 2) empty vessels to have their souls returned to when the first objective is done
The people working on the project never foresaw the replicants developing their own consciousness and living like actual humans, which was the thing that fucked the whole plan and made those replicants' gestalts go insane and then give that replicant the Black Scrawl, causing it to die and be impossible to regenerate again
