You can make 5 units into einherjars that you can summon, or learn their skills for a price. I suggest you take 5 units, make them as ludicrisly strong as you can, and use those. For instance, if you start with birthright and make your Avatar incredibly strong, you can learn his/her abilities as soon as you get to Your Castle

She works pretty well without me changing her class, had her pair up with Wolfdick for Nohr and later swapped that support with Velour so I had those two paired up and they just switched whenever the other's Hp got to low. They also recovered HP every turn so no problem. Had her fuck Takumi in Revelations so that just worked the same way I played in Nohr. Never used a tome with her, because they are shit but her speed was good enough where she never got overtaken.
