As far as I understand, there are two general types of """"VR"""" (none of it is actually VR, its a marketing term)
1. Gimmicky ones that require input different from traditional games (head-turning, moving hands, legs, etc.). I think its safe to say that these types of VR are dead or arrival, nobody needs that shit in their vidyas, swinging a sword using your own hands sounds like a really amazing idea but try doing it for 2 hours. This is a videogame equivalent of fleshlights - in the end everyone went back to just jerking their dicks.
2. Just a headset with traditional input. Its basically glorified 3D glasses for a 500$ pricetag, I personally see no reason to bother, but whatever, will probably find its niche audience with too much money and attention span problems.
People who think VR will blow up and change vidya forever (sadly, these people include big ass company investors) are morons.

I don't know. I mean, I like the concept of it having given the Vive a proper try at an event I can say it's a pretty fun experience.
However the Vive itself didn't sell me so much as the concept. Current 'VR' headsets just aren't there technologically. The image isn't clear enough, the pixels on the screen are clearly visible, the motion controllers feel like a compromise between something more sophisticated (like gloves that give tactile feedback and have 1:1 tracking right down to your finger tips) and a normal controller, probably because the more sophisticated option doesn't exist just yet. I also feel that due to it's numerous limitations the lighthouse system is a dead end.
Not to mention that the majority of games available right now are the equivalent of mobile apps like fruit ninja.
All in all, maybe in 5 years when the tech reaches a more acceptable point and it's a more reasonable price I might consider buying one but for now I'm gonna give the Vive a pass.

Got my hands on a Vive yesterday and will have it for about a week, and even with my shitty build that could hardly handle it you can tell that it's more than just a gimmick. The sense of presence next to certain large objects or looking down a steep cliff is almost overwhelming at times. And the sense of 3D is 10/10.
Not that the experience is flawless, by a long shot.. Installing and configuring everything took way longer than you'd expect for such a otherwise well developed product. It's obvious that it's new tech and the vive software-devs are far from sure with what they're doing.
The resolution is also not near what you want. It's passable but reading is a chore, objects never look really "crisp", and things far away looks blurry.
But the best part about it (from the little experience I've got with a couple of free demos) are the wiimotes. They feel fucking incredible in your hand and the tracking of them is as far as I could tell flawless. That they felt so spot-on helped lift the entire experience a notch and also helped you feel like you were in that 3D environment, and not just looking through a cool monitor.
What I'm most looking forward to trying out next is 3D sculpting and 3D film (like Avatar)

VR is a fucking failure. VR is nothing special. Its not even a fad, because in order for something to be a fad, it needs to first sell extremely well, which VR definitely won't, because it's a fucking uncomfortable, non massmarket appealing piece of technology that's been around since the 90s.

I haven't bought any VR-stuff. What I'd like to use it for, is as a simple monitor (with 3D effects if possible) for typical "cockpit-games" like flight simulators, car games and of course, space fighter games. (Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen etc).
