RoN's multiplayer is basically dead, while AoE2 still has shitload of people playing, both the old and HD versions.

I used to say RoN until I actually played multiplayer with multiple people.
For a game that big, the progression goes by too fast and it's not nearly as in depth and explored as AoE2.
