The blue lanterns are save points. Throughout early game they were pretty good indicators of safe zones but eventually ghosts start appearing in those sections and the blue lanterns go out while the ghosts are in the same room. Also the house in daytime acts as a safe hub at first, but eventually you start seeing ghosts there too, though I'm not sure if they can attack you.

Save points are the giant blue crystals which are usually in their own room or far away from enemies, but a couple of crystals in the game are mimics which attack you when you try to "save".
