Why are the Legend of Zelda series the best games ever made? I've been gaming for over 20 years and the only game series that comes close are the Super Mario platformers. Why are Zelda games so great?

They're simply not. A few games in the series can be considered classics but there are many games across the spectrum that easily trump the majority of the series. If I had to pick any single game as a "best" I'd simply say the original just for the sheer groundbreaking nature of it in regards to console games.
