Japan's relationship with women is a lot healthier than it ever was in the west. Some of Japan's greatest cultural heroes were women, and despite heavy influences from China and confucianism it never developed the view that women are somehow less 'human' than men. Women are treated as equals to men intellectually, inferior physically, but superior spiritually/emotionally.

I'd be willing to say that woman who takes abuse from her boyfriend out of some strange delusion that he wants whats best for her is a "strong character", in that her disposition is clearly defined and her story is very much born from it. Her actions or lack thereof will lead her through the story to some inevitable end.
A weak character for me is one that is poorly defined and seems to serve no particular purpose to the plot.
