Is this what the game looks like emulated? Shame the PC version has so many other problems (though they're not gamebreaking but they're annoying) because it looks a lot better.

It looks like that if you use native resolution on an emulator that has dithering enabled.

A big benefit of the PC version is proper perspective texture correction. The PS1 lacks that. There is an emulator called PGXP (PSXR fork) that is trying to fix that. It's a big improvement, but isn't 100% yet. The PC version itself has some drawbacks. So there's sadly no 100% perfect modern MGS version out there.

The ideal would be z-buffer, tpc, hd, hardware accelleration, dithering, all in one package. People are working on that.

Wolves are noble animals, they're not like dogs. In Yupik, the word for wolf is kegluneq, and the Aleuts revere them as honorable cousins.

They call mercenaries like us "Dogs of War".

It's true, we're all for sale at some price or another.

But you're different...untamed...solitary.

You're no dog.

You're a wolf.

It's a lot less of a hassle to stick it in a ps2 and use a component cable than it is to get rgb from a ps1 into some studio monitor.
Unless you're playing on PAL shit.

Well yeah no one really cares about that but having played the PC MGS1 myself it's pretty hard to go back to the PS1 version.

I don't believe for a second you could enjoy MG1 over MGS1. MG1 is pretty terrible compared to even MG2.

>On my part I'm really proud that I was able to do a global-hack where I kept the fixed-point coordinates sub-pixel precision, so our PC port did not "tremble" or "shake" like others to come. Basically on the PSX when you draw a triangle, the "chip" makes all numbers integer pixels, and each vertex "sticks" to a concrete pixel - this makes "shimmering" like feature, and I was able to get around it.
Also interesting:
>As we couldn't do shit about having the original mod-music working, we relied on couple of then popular MGS web-sites and "stole" from them the whole music piece, and other things which came as an audio "pre-rendered" form, and then played them directly from our game. Ah... So embarrased!
>>
>>343497031
Oh and another one.
>(we) had a dedicated "optimization" programmer - he basically went through the code, have found the hot-spots and turned them into assembly (mainly model t-junction extrapolations, splitting the model in pieces to fit in the small 1kb fast-cache, and few others). Hopefully he kept the original "C" code, and it was easier for us to choose the right part here and there.

I still haven't figured out how to get the prerendered cutscene videos to play in either MGS1 or MGS2 on PC. Some people apparently have them working but they don't work for me. That's really the only problem I have with the PC versions of those game and it sucks that there's this small thing keeping me from fully enjoying them on the platform because otherwise I do think they're the definitive editions.

I actually enjoyed MG1, it wasn't a bad game at all. I enjoyed the design and gameplay. It was a bit limited, but for 1987 it's great, lots of creativity.
I enjoyed it more than MGS in terms of gameplay, I wasn't fond of the controls in 3D, but MGS is a more straightforward game, I never got lost in it, while on MG1 (and 2) I often found myself wandering around and backtracking a lot, they had some cryptic shit.

yes, MG2 was a huge improvement over 1, but I really liked both of them. I like 2D gameplay over 3D for sure.

I'm planning to play Ghost Babel, and Snake's Revenge later.

>>
>>343497487
>>343497775
I don't see it as MGS being more straightforward but MG1 having tons of really bad game design that might have been caused by how old it is. It's not just that it's difficult or "cryptic" but that they do shit like put a necessary item behind a wall but don't give any indication about where the fucking thing is. That's not added difficulty, that's bad game design.

>>343497880

God Policenauts sucks! It's like a really bad Visual Novel. And I don't know, seriously, VN are like the easiest thing in the world to design. So when you design a bad one, that is remarkable.

Like the entire story of Policenaughts is not only a pixel hunt, but you basically have to try everything, and then try everything multiple times. So if you don't know this, like if you want to know about some photograph, you ask about the photograph, and she tells you something, and then you have to ask the same topic again. So that photograph entry can occur 3 or 4 times. And then you have to start from the beginning and try them all again because the third time might have opened something new up. And you have to exhaust every single option. ALL OF THEM. Before the game will let you move on. That is HORRIBLE.

It's not like an oldschool adventure game. Because in an adventure game you don't have to look at and inspect everything on the screen multiple times. You're just sitting there, desperately wanting to move on with the plot, and then you're stuck trying to inspect every little thing over and over again, and asking people the same questions over and over again. Ah it's bad. And when it finally gets exciting, it gets exciting for 20 seconds then you're right back at it.

Is the plot interesting? Not really. You know what the story is? It is 5% Blade Runner, 95% Lethal Weapon. It's straight up Riggs and Murtaugh. It's not even subtle. He rips off whole scenes. It's amazing.

I did much better in MGS
>>
>>343497940

MGS is a lot more straightforward, there are a lot of points of no return, on MG1 you can always go back to the very first screen of the game.
I agree it has a lot of badly design choices but given how experimental this game was in 1987 I can excuse it and overall, I won't lie, I had fun with it. The only moment that really got me stuck, got me to check a guide and then call bullshit was the missile launcher you get from calling Jennifer on a specific room. But I did find pretty much all the other stuff on my own, even the hidden path on the gas room (yes, I often punched walls autistically to see if there were any secrets).

The disappointing thing with MG1 and 2 is that the bosses were piss-easy and not really interesting, MGS excelled at bosses.
