I think /vp/ was where it began.
There was no serious problem with Pokemon, it infested the board only when a highly anticipated game came out, same as any other game. You should've seen /v/ when Mass Effect 2 came out. But apparently /v/ can't handle games they don't like so they bitched and moaned to moot until he caved and made /vp/. The ironic thing is he didn't do it until a few months after HGSS came out, after the "infestation" had already died down and stayed mostly in one thread. The split didn't solve much of anything, it was a placebo effect. /v/ was exactly the same, as this screenshot I took the day after /vp/ was made shows. But this taught /v/ that whenever you don't like something, bitch and moan until it goes away. This caused /vg/ to be made, and even more vidya left /v/. /vr/ is a weird case where no one really asked for it though, but nonetheless it took even more vidya discussion away from /v/. And I honestly just scoff whenever someone suggests splitting /v/ further.
