That's the thing about multiplayer games. Multiplayer games either snowball, or they crash and burn, because they live and die on their communities. A multiplayer game could be the greatest game of all time, with thousands of potential game modes, a perfect matchmaking system, total balance between all characters and classes, gorgeous next-gen graphics that manage to be run at 60fps without a dip, and servers that never, ever crash... but if nobody's playing it, then it doesn't matter.

Honestly, I think releasing it first was a gigantic mistake, especially at full price with a season pass and DLC out the ass.
Personally, I would have put it on the backburner and see how Overwatch did and do some tweaks and adjustments to the game in the meantime to iron out existing issues. Release the game several months down the line during a dry season, with better promotion then it got, and reduce the price from $60 to $20-30 from the get-go to be competitive to Overwatch.
It might not do what they want, but it probably would not have been DOA at launch like it was with no desire for anyone to play it. This is Evolve all fucking over again.

Also, having to unlock characters for online play is bullshit. Gearbox should have tuned the story mode so you're forced to play as a variety of characters (so the game's single player would act as a tutorial) while just allowing players to pick who they want to play for multiplayer.

Battleborn has a full single player campaign, Overwatch doesn't.
Battleborn has PvE, Overwatch doesn't.
Battleborn has a unique and colorful artstyle with hours of dialog, Overwatch is a pixar rip off with 2 minutes of dialog.
Battleborn has 30 heroes, Overwatch has 21.
Battleborn has tons of unlockables and thousands of gear and ability configurations, Overwatch doesn't.
Battleborn requires skill and has a friendly and mature community, Overwatch is for casual kiddos being toxic and juvenile.

Thing is though, a decent studio would have better plans. Typically, at this point the game would be reduced to a skeletal crew creating DLC, bugfixes, etc with most of the major staff moved over to other projects at this point. Yes, shareholders are shitheads, but it would have been in their best interest to wait. And not even that long, I think August/September would have worked.
I am not even saying them waiting to see if Overwatch failed, but just let the hype die down and not have years worth of development go down the tube because you decided to beat a much bigger (and more hyped) title to market.
At this point, like another anon said, going F2P with microtransactions is the only way they might make a profit (and a playerbase) now. They fucked up big.

More or less, yeah. I doubt Battleborn even crossed Blizzard's mind when they were making Overwatch. You don't invest bazillions of dollars into a game that's been marketed about as effectively as the polio vaccine to flatten the losers who made Colonial Marines.
Dueling games are something that can work - look at Infamous versus Prototype, which both managed to be successful in their own right. But they tried to trash-talk an oncoming steamroller and counted on their usual fandom - the cross-section of people who like picking up fifty variants of the same ten guns and people who like listening to dialogue as written by an understudy of Joss Whedon raised in a cave by hipsters - to beat a game that seems to have been designed to successfully appeal to every single demographic in the entire universe.

I can't be the only one who finds Battleborn character designs to be really unpleasant. The proportions are disturbing. Like that weirdly long girl with the worm torso, or the lumberjack with the tiny freaky head. Every time I look at a BB character I cringe inside because they're so distorted and freakish.
