I played original DF 1.0 but never did more than get my ass kicked, then RL buddies quit and i lost interest (plus was busy with hard classes and shit). Still loved the concept, even with all the shitty stuff it had. Loved briefly being with a guild in their cool clan town before we got buttfucked hard.
Are people pretty chill so far? Would be nice to get in and make some friends who don't mind someone who sucks. I don't mind losing a lot but getting shit-talked by sore winners gets tiring.

Do yourself a favor and go read the manga on mangasaurus (translation has a lot of unesscary cursing and untranslated weeb words, but they have by far the best scan quality, especially for the later arcs).
The manga is way better then the anime, which cut out the entire last arc of the series, changed the third arc, and has shit art and animation when the manga has fantastic art once you get past the first arc

Way older but it's unfortunate that no game has still given you so many options in how to play. The comfiest part of it for me was the housing, and while it wasn't as elaborate as later games the sheer amount of items and shit is insane. Plus it's fun to have a shop and sell shit, haggle, etc.

Not necessarily related but SWGemu private servers, UO private shards, and WoW private servers all have that same issue. I can't think of one single private server for any game that doesn't have at least one semi-corrupt admin.
Not counting just shit I don't like or bad personalities, but outright forgiveness of exploits to favored friends or even blatant cheating. It's really too bad but seems like more of a general "people are faggots" thing more than a private server issue.

The game is garbage but it's not doing badly, especially at the moment. In comparison to WoW numbers (even with them being so low right now) of course almost everything looks shitty. And you could argue that swtor was a failure in that it never achieved those levels of population, especially in relation to the numbers spent on ads and hype.

Yep, that is 100% true. It all depends on the game and some games have done f2p better than others. Generally i dislike microtransactions but there are some great examples of them implemented well and the game does awesome for it.
ArcheAge, for example, would be an instance of microtransactions being particularly terrible. RNGboxes and whale-bait, the entire shop.

The Secret World - A very unique setting and dynamic gameplay. There are a handful of things I dislike about it but overall its one of the better ones out there. Puzzles that expect you to use the in-game browser to look up certain answers (ie you need the Babylonian alphabet for a certain quest etc.. ). Very enjoyable and comfy, though the main issues is monetization for outfit max comfiness, but the game is buy to play so that's somewhat understandable just like...
Guild Wars 2 - Dynamic combat, comfy gameplay, great quality of life features, buy to play with a gem store. Lately the gem store has gotten out of hand in my opinion but the core of the game is still good especially for newer players.
Final Fantasy XIV - Maximum comfiness, especially with their non-instanced housing. Housing districts are instanced, but each district has a neighborhood of non-instanced housing plots so you get to know your neighbors. Gold saucer, good quality of life features, and best of all its subscription! Highly highly recommended.
Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues - not officially launched yet but in beta, this comfy MMO is a spiritual successor to Ultima Online, in 3D! Still going through some major changes (ie graphically, no aesthetically pleasing hairstyles are in yet etc). Old school housing focus, tons of crafting and roleplaying elements etc. I highly suggest backing now direct via the site to lock in. I've been a backer since 2013 and have watched it develop. Overall I'm pleased, with the only thing I dislike is the amount of item mall stuff given we've not seen the post-launch "can you get it all in game" setup or not yet.

You should absolutely back as soon as possible, as the pre-launch packages are going away. Buying now gets you some extra widgets for the same or lower cash expenditure. By the end of this month pledges are expired, so buy now to get the good stuff and cheaper. I suggest either the $45 "Adventurer" pledge for the cheapest, or the $60 "Founder" if you can afford it. They go up from there, depending on how much you want to spend.
There are pretty massive changes going in every patch so dont' let anything turn you off in the minutia/mechanics if you see something you like in the overall experience, so i urge you to back now - it has been in development a long time and has come a long way.
I also backed Crowfall, as it happens, and am currently playing its (much earlier) betas when they are up! Sadly the Eternal Kingdoms are nowhere near ready, but they seem to be working well on on the combat element developing it little by little with plenty of player input, so I expect the same from Eternal Kingdoms. It may end up with some good RP focus down the line if we keep pushing for it though.
If you liked these, I HIGHLY suggest you look into Chronicles of Elyria. I've already backed it on Kickstarter. Even if this is the case, I'm sure anyone would get $35 of enjoyment out of it. As far as I can tell, all of the major MMOs I've backed and 90% of non-MMO games have been doing very well, with successful launches, quality ongoing development etc. Shroud of the Avatar for instance is certainly on path to deliver what was promised, Crowfall development is too early to tell but the combat dynamics all seem well put together, and Star Citizen is certainly coming along nicely. I didn't expect any of these to be done overnight, but the progress I've seen has justified my initial investment (and any subsequent investment I added later).
Backing early if you can afford it always is better. At worst okay you get a lukewarm title or whatnot, at best you get a really unique game for cheap and/or some nifty in-game roleplaying friendly stuff. CoE is ambitious, but just like they said Star Citizen couldn't possibly do multiplayer ships etc... now they're played every day in the alpha etc. CoE's plans seem more achievable based on what others have been able to do; I personally think its worthwhile.
