Sony wanted to make their console seem more sophisticated, and less of a game box, since the PS2's main selling point was the fact that you could use it as a media center.
They hired some famous French (?) abstract artist to direct the commercials. After he completed them, and they aired them all, Sony realized how fucking horrendous of an idea that was, and started from scratch.

Among people who knew who John Romero was, sort of. He was coming off a streak of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 1 and 2, and Quake, all of which were massive critical and commercial successes on top of being minor technological marvels for their time. On top of that he was practically the face of id for a while because of his flamboyant personality and the only real alternative being Carmack. So he wasn't really a celebrity, but among people who were familiar with id it would be perfectly understandable to not see the Daikatana fiasco coming.

It's kind of the same campaign five gum went for with it's commercials. Some creepy dystopian industrial setting with machines designed to give you "sensations".
The problem is people didn't get the commercials and just saw a bunch of weird shit, like the crying baby with the ps3, or the early one with the Scottish Ayy Lmao who's making an argument about using the ps2 to do amazing shit rather than take credit for simply being alive after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.
