The biggest hardships he's dealt with is dead friends, and the dragon balls trivialized that.

Again, Goku chose to do all this. He could have told Bulma to fuck off and kept living in the woods. Instead he decided to go on an adventure, eventually begging master roshi to train him so he could become stronger and fight stronger people, all of his own free will.
Actually almost everything you describe aside from getting a heart attack or his tail cut off (which he barely even noticed) is of his own ambitious free will.
