Because their competition already does that.

Instead of their being 3 identical consoles on the market, Nintendo does it's own thing so it doesn't have to compete over the same demographic.

And it's a smart move too. Look at the current Xbone/PS4 split.
Xbone is completely fucking irrelevant because it provides basically the exact same platform as PS4 but worse because its exclusives are all going cross-platform with the PC you already own.
