These little bastards are the reason I haven't finished PJ yet, even though I'm close to the end of the game.
I literally just could not (and still can not) bring forth the effort required to keep backtracking and doing more paper toad garbage. It's not fun, it's not challenging, and it certainly doesn't actually help any other gameplay element. You could remove all of the seconds wasted on the paper toad rescue bullshit and nothing would change about the game at all.

64 had the short visual gags, but the characters in the world didn't call attention to it. It was just Mario Story and was presented like a story book.
TTYD's curses were gimmicks that called attention to the paper theme and wore out their welcome quickly. Plus, characters in the world would call attention to it.

It's a Mario & Luigi game starring Paper Mario. Don't try to expect any more Paper Mario from the game than that.
With that said, it's actually a pretty fun game if only because Alpha Dream cut down on tutorials significantly and added a fast-forward button for cut scenes. The story's pretty simple, but the devs themselves couldn't think of a simple way to write a story with the two franchises without going off the deep end in OC.

People have an equivalent of doing that in every other game, not just sticker star. For 64 for example, its avoiding HP on level up. For TTYD its taking on the Pit of 100 trials after you get cursed in Hooktail's castle.

The first game was simply called Mario Story in Japan. Paper was nothing more than a clever aesthetic choice. The characters acted normally, and never acknowledged the fact they were made out of paper
Then someone on the development team had the bright idea that paper needed to be emphasized, and it has slowly gotten to the point NPCs can't go five minutes without throwing that in your face. Also, everything in the world needs to be made out of paper now.
