Thief 1 has much better story atmosphere and pace.
But Thief 2 has a bit better gameplay since all the missions are actually thief missions.

Thief 2. I didn't care too much for the non-thieving missions in 1 and holy fuck the thieves guild can go fuck itself. The problems with 2 are minor in comparison.
>>
>>343448245

4 was good for reviving the series. A shame it had to be like that but I still have hope that after the movie, Squeenix will give the series to a competent studio and it'll get the Deus Ex treatment.

A man can dream.
>>
>>343449279
Thief doesn't translate into modern gaming as well as Deus Ex does so that's highly unlikely.

Did Thief ever really die though? The modding community never really died down, between TDS and Thief 4 there was T2x and TDM, and hundreds of other missions including many mini-campaigns. And the quality on these things vary but a great many of them are better than anything we're going to get from a new AAA Thief game. It wasn't much of a revival, just a subpar addition.

>>
>>343449408
It's a very simple concept to translate to modern gaming. Shit, i have Thief 1 and 2 set up to play with a 360 controller and it works great.

They're just fucking idiots.
>>
>>343451076
I meant the style of gameplay doesn't translate well. Deus Ex is an action/stealth with emphasis on the action. Thief is a stealth game through and through and outright discourages any combat. People don't want to be stuck in a level for hours sneaking around and avoiding enemies.
>>
disohnored is hitman thief deusex Spiritual Successor.
however not thief.
>>
>>343451620

Well Styx proved stealth games are still profitable. And it's getting a sequel too. Granted a Thief game would need a somewhat bigger budget but still.
>>
>>343451620
I dunno, I think pure stealth is still a pretty popular gameplay type. Definitely not AS popular as stealth action, but still.
Granted, you probably would have to give Garrett a lot more mobility to maneuver around guards quickly and escape if you're seen, or just make the levels way easier, maybe reboot the mechanics a little like they did with Deus Ex. The older games definitely are too slow for a lot of people.

Would you trust your average reviewer's opinion on stealth gamepaly?
Remember, these are probably the kind of people who would dismiss Thief because it's "archaic".
>>
>>343444354

Better question. I've never played either (despite being born in the 80s so I was old enough to play them when released just never did) so should I just buy both or one of them?

I enjoy games from this era so graphics will be of no concern just wanna know if they're both worth playing or just one of them.
>>
>>343453640
They're both part of a bigger picture. You can't just play one and not the other. Play both.

They are both worth playing. Some people will try to meme you into skipping the first game but you should ignore these people, they don't know what they've missed. Just don't be surprised when zombies pop out in Thief Gold. Take the monster missions for what they are (fun Indiana Jones adventures) and you will not be disappointed. Also don't feel bad if you look up a guide for the level called Thieves' Guild.
Get TFix for Thief Gold and tafferpatcher for Thief 2, don't bother with graphical upgrade mods.

>>
>>343449279
Deus Ex HR was the same level of horrible as Thi4f. It amazes me that anybody thinks that game was acceptable in any way.
>>
>>343454163
>Just don't be surprised when zombies pop out in Thief Gold.

I would actually like that honestly as long as it's not a theme from the get go and is instead gradually introduced via a storyline (I saw someone mention paranormal happening which intrigued me).

They're both under $2 so I'll grab just those as I'm assuming the "Thief Collection" isn't worth bothering since I heard the newest game was shit.
>>
>>343454370

Well granted any game made after Pong is a piece of shit that killed gaming but still, HR was good. And you are one jaded waste of skin.
>>
>>343454581
I think the problem people have with the zombies is that one of the early missions is absolutely massive and mazelike, and it's all monsters. People go into the game expecting to be breaking into mansions the whole time and get caught off guard. Personally, it's the level that really sold me on the game. There's a lot of cool things in it.

Let's see how their new Underworld game ends up before we talk about them doing another Thief game. Underworld Ascendant doesn't look all that great.

>>343455214

Hey, I'm skeptical from their misadventures with Deadly Shadows/Invisible War alone

They are in pre-alpha stage right now(similarly to SS1R), but I'm not a huge fan of all the elements either. I'll definitely take a closer look though

They kept praising on twitter the fact that Stellmach is working on UA and that we should look forward to the stealth, but I'm not sure what to think yet.

Stephen Russell's Role Revealed in Underworld Ascendant!

We announced back during the Kickstarter that Looking Glass' fan favorite voice talent Stephen Russell and Terri (System Shock's SHODAN) Brosius would take part in Underworld Ascendant, but haven't revealed either of their roles... until now.

Stephen will play the role of Cabirus, the character responsible for the establishing the fallen utopia in Ultima Underworld before his mysterious, untimely death. While you've never encountered Cabirus directly before, you've certainly seen the huge impact he had on The Stygian Abyss. In Underworld Ascendant you'll come face-to-face with him... somehow... and learn about the secret pre-history of the series, directly from its enigmatic founder.

Neat.

Disorientation-esque? I know Melan is the go-to guy, but I'm curious if any new good stuff appeared in the recent months?

Also, did the /vr/ thread get consumed by Doom?
>>
>>343457601
I haven't been playing FM's lately so I don't know if I'd know anything you don't. If you've played enough to know authors by name you've probably played skacky's missions, but if not then go play them.
>>
>>343457763
Well, that's alright.
I've went through a bit of skacky's missions, I remember Shadow Politics the most

But seriously though, what happened to the /vr/ thread? There was also this guy that tried faithfully remaking the textures and was posting updates in the thread. That shit looked gorgeous but he said he took a break to work on another project.
Anything recent?
>>
>>343458315
I think that project's abandoned, there have been no updates on it since he posted the files for Bafford's manor.
As for FM's the only recent one I've tried is Waterfront Racket. It's nothing like Disorientation and it's nothing like Thief in general but it's pretty cool.

>>343457510
I really have to get around to finishing that game. I've gotten very far in it twice but I always get sidetracked by some shit. I got to the part where Ylsids attack Arx but I was terribly underleveled and overwrote my earlier saves.

Anon, the best classics in the genre have deliberately underpowered AI so that you can actually stealth by them.

Hitman Blood Money's AI is abysmal but people still love it.
