Because 1 lets you just go at your own pace for most of the scenarios. I also love the amount of party customization there is. From what I've seen of 2, since I haven't played it yet, it looks nicer and definitely more finished, but it's more linear in its gameplay and the story. Basically, it all comes down to how open the game is.
