Have you ever tried learning a language by playing games in that language?

It seems like the next best thing to real-life interaction since you're forced to understand the language in order to progress, but I'm curious to find out if it really works.

So RPGs and adventure games are probably the best?
How do you connect the words to their meanings? As an Englishman learning a foreign language seems very difficult to me. We have it too easy.

unless it's an interactive edutainment game where you learn a language you aren't going to learn one by playing games in that language. you need to learn the language basics first. being exposed to the language after the fact just makes you better at it, it doesnt make you learn it outright

English and Spanish has a lots of similar words with the same meaning, i just read the ones i could understand and tried to find the whole meaning of the sentence.

I don't see why not. If it were an RPG where decision were made via dialogue options, inventory items and quest logs you would be required to understand in order to progress.

Buongiorno, my name is Mario Rossi.

I'm a 27 years old American Italiophile (picciotto for you black gangsters). I eat spaghetti and drink wine for lunch, and spend my days discussing about football with my friends at the bar and playing superior Italian games. (Assetto corsa, Grezzo 2)

I train with my mandolino every day, this superior musical instrument can pierce through steel eardrums because it is used since 2000 BC, and is vastly superior to any other string instrument on earth. I earned my mandolino license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Italian fluently, both Terrone and Polentone dialect, and I write fluently as well, I know everything about Italian history and their pizza code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Italian visa, I am moving to Venezia to attend a prestigious Scuola Superiore to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a Mafioso or a Parlamentare!

I own several fake Versace sunglasses, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Italy, so I can fit in easier. I play cards with my elders and seniors and speak Italian as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Italy!

>>343430496

Same here.

When I was 12 I couldn't understand ocarina of time so I gradually learned what the fuck was happening through interactions and answers you could give every now and then, it helps that the writing was really simple, after that I jumped to movies and cartoons and ended up speaking it without realizing it by the time I was 14, It appears I'm quite skilled in general when it comes to understanding languages, or maybe english is just that easy to learn, I dunno, but still I would recommend simply surrounding yourself with the language you want to learn if you can, your mind will adapt to it like any other thing and you will incorporate it in yourself in a couple of years, do be careful not to "taint" your original language by mixing it with words from another, it's the worst kind of habit.

That was how I learned English: started with original versions of games because pirate translations in my country sucked balls and there was no licensed market, continued with web videos, then started watching movies and reading books, and now I'd say I'm rather proficient at it, certainly enough to discuss stuff on weeaboo imageboards.

I learned English by playing vidya. I also played games as much as possible in Spanish during HS to increase my grade, which I did.
>>
>>343440383
I'd say none. When there are subtitles, especially translated, you tend to rely on them too much. Without subtitles you'll have no choice but on your ability to understand spoken language, making you more proficient at it. It's a sink or swim approach and that's the best method of teaching anything that doesn't lead to immediate death on failure.
