It depends. Females are weaker than men, both physically and mentally. so in some horror games it would probably make the situation more tense if playing as a female. Like Dead Space for example. No way would a woman be able to stomp or punch the shit out of Necromorphs like Isaac does, or resist the Marker's mental fuckery.
A game that already does this is RE4, where playing as Ashley is much more tense than Leon, since she can't do anything but run away from the Ganados and find lamps to throw.

It shouldn't really matter in most cases but I think if psychological, female. Its mainly preference but I think outside of mainstream media there is a lot more to play with with a female character, when done right at least. First which comes to mind is Alice: Madness Returns. Next is Silent Hill.

In movies, having a girl can really help the viewer feel helpless. I've heard this is thre reason behind a lot of horror having a chick as the lead.
I think it depends on the game. If its a horror game like dead space or doom a male makes more sense because I requires pretty much killing everything you come near. While a game like Alien Isolation the game is designed for the female character to be smart and out maneuver the problems.
The last of Us is a good example because when playing Joel he tends to be more harsh and protective in a hostile fashion where the portion playing as Ellie you stay more hidden and play somewhat stealthily.

The only time it really doesn't matter is if the story is based on the MC stumbling upon something they weren't directly involved in, which is the only situation where the game hinges solely on the character's reaction rather than who they are as a whole person.
