Borderlands for some reason I remember enemies being a bit tougher than usual if they were a step ahead or two, though most of it time it was manageable

Age of Empires 2 gives you a damage boost if your units are on higher terrain, most notable with archer units
MH4U fucking loved putting uneven terrain almost everywhere, so having high ground helps with aerial attacks to start a mount the monster, maybe even roll off a ledge to cancel it into another aerial and makes life a tad easier for Gunners though it won't stop Tigrex pouncing on your ass

For 1v1 fights (most hunt quests), with good oils and potions you can easily take enemies 10 lvls higher.

Oblivion, the first thing I would do when making a new character would be to aggro a guard and then run out into the woods and jump on top of a rock, the stupid AI would just stand there as I shot it with arrows until I could take the guard's armor and weapon.

High ground always gives you an advantage when dueling in JK2/JKA IF you're not attacking.
Now if you were to attack then indeed it would be a crutch in that case since the enemy can just move out of the way and counter you with blue uppercut.
