Oh, I agree, and I think each game you listed is better than ADOM, too (I especially like Sil). I was wondering what you had to say on it.
Personally, my biggest issue with ADOM isn't the wiki-diving/spoilers/killing cats/etc., but rather how the ability system works. It's an example of "cool ideas, poor execution" - most abilities are utterly useless, and you end up pumping the same ones each time. Biskup put "two-weapon fighting" in, but then still makes it useless as a skill. Stealth is useless. Pickpocketing is a gimmick. Swimming is useless. Bridge-building is tedious and useless ... and so on. The skills are even worse - most of them you never use.
ADOM gives such an illusion of choice with this and other things. At any given moment, though, you really don't have much choice - you build up your character in a given way, train certain weapons, complete quests in (mostly) the same order (especially in the beginning).
Roguelike literally doesn't mean anything anymore.

Truth be told, I really liked ADOM when I first started playing it, until I realized that it was the exact opposite of what DCSS devs are tailoring their game into - nothing but meaningless bloat.
As I see it, DCSS and ADOM are the two extremes of content - DCSS with content cuts made (or at least back when I played it) daily, and ADOM with its huge amounts of unplayable and worthless fluff.
Even so I'd recommend DCSS before I'd recommend ADOM, because at least DCSS is playable without a reference or guide to steer you through the constant pitfalls biskup threw in.
And the fucking paywall is stupid for such a mess.
