You can buy keys in the game to unlock doors
You'll find them in shops, usually hidden, in only 3 towns. Rimuldar (northwest corner), Tantegel Castle (you will need a key to even buy keys here), and Cantlin.
You can fight the Axe Knight in Hauksness over and over again for an easy way to build your experience and gold. After defeating him, walk away 1 step and return to the same spot to fight him as many times as you desire.
Ultima is much better than this

Dragon Quest is more fun and streamlined, Ultima has more freedom.
I like both series
The Magic Armor and Erdrick's Armor both restore HP when walking. Also you can walk through swamps without losing HP when equipped with Erdrick's Armor.
You can start the game with higher stats if you enter TEST as your name
