What is /v/'s opinion of System Shock 2?
>>
Does the co-op work well in this game?
>>

Not him, but I played about 20 minutes of coop with a friend the other night, things seemed to work well enough. I have yet to play another session so I don't know if there's going to be anything fucked up in terms of inventory or upgrades.

It works so you can finish the game together, but the experience would not be smooth, expect to crash at bulkhead level transitions from time to time. There's also inventory dupe bug when you load the game but it's avoidable as far as i know.

One of the best games ever. It's got a solid place in my top 10. Super atmospheric, great story, wonderful ost, and fun gameplay that changes with each build you use.
>>
>>343354683
I like it quite a lot, it's a bit unpolished though specially towards the end.

Is maintenance worth it at all?

I had played this years ago but had to stop due to crashing issues, and I remember having a lot of trouble finding maintenance tools. Just recently I picked it up again and leveled up repair, and it seems I can just fix weapons indefinitely, never even touching a maintenance tool.

Why the fuck would they remake System Shock 1 when no one fucking played it or liked it?
>>
>>343360235
Because people have played ss2 and might be interested in 1 based on that
>>
>>343360235
Because SS1 is near unplayable today, while there's a bunch of mods that turn SS2 into something that you could mistake for an indie game released this year.

>>
>>343360932

A great game, but the atmosphere falls apart now.

One thing you can't take away from older games (unless we're talking 16-bit before real tracks) is the audio. It's something that makes or takes away from the atmosphere of a game. I really think that sound is one of the most powerful tools in media. Sorry if you're deaf, then it's light spectrum. I mean there are some games that technically aren't very good but the designers nailed the lighting and sound.

>>
>>343354683
I haven't play it but I have played its spiritual "successors" Bioshock, and loved Bioshock 1 and 2. I've heard they simplified Bioshock when compared to System Shock so I'd assume I'll love System Shock even more, right? I mean it also helps that I have enjoyed Deadspace's spooky mining space station.
>>
>>343363237
>average person
Where do you think we are?
>>
>>343363237

I hadn't even heard of System Shock until about 2007 in spite of gaming since about 1994. I only had a Windows 98 PC that could play this kind of shit by the time I was about eight (my dad worked as a University administrator and got a powerhouse to work with at home). Even then I was usually only allowed to play X trail games even though I begged my mom to buy Diablo and Tomb Raider. "I know that money is yours hun, but you can only buy educational games."

Ugh....
>>
>>343354683
I just beat this today actually. It has its charm and definitely piques my interests in the possibility of cyberpunk visuals. Aside from the interesting level design and atmosphere, the game feels very clichéd and anti-climatic at some points. I don't feel immersed when my character runs like a lunatic smacking at enemies and jumping at turrets with a wrench. When I face enemies in this game I don't consider the shock of how horrifying they appear, but rather my wishes are they don't kill me in time. Some of the enemies are interesting, but Shodan is a very boring antagonist. Her stutters and boring monologues about taking over the ship drone over the game, and she doesn't come off as a threat, more so a bitch. The gameplay also seems a bit clunky.

I think why I don't feel impressed is because I played Bioshock first and found that a rather enjoying experience. Although I like SS2 more, I can't help but wonder why Bioshock took so much from SS2. I understand it's a spiritual successor but the two play perfectly together. So many of the characters and even their designs and attack patterns are identical (ie. Big Daddy and the Shumbler). I'm not upset that Irrational decided to make a modern version of Bioshock, I just find it rather lazy they didn't try improving the sequel and instead have worse level design and generally casualize it.

And look at the 4chan using misfit those educational games have turned you into

The need for combat is pretty overstated in this game, so a lot of the pure PSI-builds rely on evasion/escaping. You really shouldn't attempt this unless you know the game fairly well.
>>

It's not bad being a misfit but I think you're wrong in that the alternatives are a proper outlet.

Movement is clunky, floaty, and not responsive at all.

Respawning enemies and overpowered guns (that turn to useless goop in the final two levels because lel noammo) make the idea of calling this a survival horror a bit of a joke.

But then, in SS1 you were mowing down entire legions with endgame weapons as well.

The story and dialogue are tops this time round, the environments still look nice even if the character models (especially Goggles himself) don't. Ending was shit. Poorly justified. Fighting SHODAN in Cyberspace as a hacker was a neat idea (if shit in execution) that reality asspull was bad even on paper.

Overall, worth playing. Fun, easy little horror-action game with an interesting aesthetic and nice dialogue. Not life changing or anything.

Level design is also worth mentioning since Bioshock neutered that to fuck and I'm still kinda salty over it.
>>
>>343364115

I'd say it does. Have you ever really looked at some of the implications of things that are casually said here? "THICC" in regards to pancakes, people wanting a dominant anime woman to step on their crotch, having waifus, general cynicism.

You're not as much of an outcast for using this website as you were, say, in 2007, but you are definitely not premium normie either.

Of course I'm using modded SS2. The entire point was the fact they are remaking SS1 instead of SS2 because SS2 already has mods that turn it into a modernish game.

If they want people to play both SS2 and SS1 before SS3 comes out, remaking SS1 is the better choice then doing a remake of SS2 which is basically done already.

Evidence along with Thief 1-2 that Looking Glass were the best dev of the era, if not ever. Marred by a weak end level like Dark Project but otherwise outstanding in pretty much every way. Try as Ken Levine might he'll never be able to do more than make games that stand in its shadow

I really enjoyed the Recreation level. I think a lot of the story unfolds in these sections, especially with the Garden and Mall. I feel bad knowing they dumped the bodies to stop The Many from tampering with them, and the Mall really makes me imagine what the crew would be doing before the invasion. I imagine all the people dancing in the bar, or playing at the Casino. I even consider all the employees shopping at the mall, especially when Xerxes says "you might be able to get a something for your special someone during Christmas". It makes the ship seem believable, and the event unfolding within it. I even have these stories where a lot of the lonely crew members enter the love stimulation units just to talk about their problems. I like a game that can draw you in like that and make you feel isolated. The recreation level did a good job of making me feel like I was a soldier actually going through a deserted mall even after finding an message that urgently states "Do not enter the mall. It crawls." I like games that do that.

That parts amazing anon. It was an absolute blast mowing down all those Gor Tigers, Virus Mutants, and Exec-Bots while exploring all those abandoned office rooms. That entire level is filled with memorable parts.

I didn't think SS2 was all that scary, but Hydroponics was the closest to getting me scared.

Yeah, I kinda enjoyed Bioshock but the game was so poorly balanced. You never needed to specialize in anything since all the better options were always in your hands, shooting felt mediocre and going melee was always the best option even more than in SS2 thanks to how unpredictable the AI was in long range gunfights and how OP the melee can be. Also, hacking becomes a chore since there's like 5 hackeable things per room. It had some excellent ideas but almost everything was poorly executed.

guys should i play thief 2 or replay deus ex
>>
>>343366559
They don't explode, they just shoot cryo balls at you. In fact ss2 has no kamikaze type enemies whatsoever
>>
>>343366832
Well she's the main antagonist so it would feel wrong not to have her in this one. Also, it's a really cliched way how they led her into 'betraying' the character. You can hear her maniacally laughing after speaking about working for her after, although it's evident she cares not for humans
>>
>>343365870
SS1's problems are minuscule compared to System Shock 2's monkey hitboxes and weapon degradation

In addition, bioshock rips from SS2 wholesale under the guise of being a spiritual sequel while improving little, diluting it completely and launching him to unearned accolades while Looking glass couldn't stay afloat

the robots do. repair bots? whatever they were. well, technically, they blow up when you shoot them, but they like trying to bearhug you.

Up until the very, very end though, that's the Many and she wholesale helps you defeat them. And then hacks reality because pbbbbbt
>>
>>343367320
The beta builds of Bioshock look a lot better. Combat is slow as fuck but IMO that's a plus since it allows you to actually think and use the environment instead of just spamming melee.

>Big Daddy and the Shumbler
>their designs
It's Rambler. The only thing they have in common is that they're both big
>and attack patterns are identical
Big daddies come in different variety, they can do charge attack with the drill, can throw you into walls, some of them use ranged weapons. Ramblers just attack you with their claws.

>>343367683
This is not a bad feeling, I just rarely get spooked in this game. It's weird because the first time playing gave me unreal amounts of horror. Seeing the hanged bodies and their shocked expressions and the hybrids calling for you made me profusely sweat within the first moments of the game. Years later after dropping it quickly, they seem rather laughable. What makes this annoying is that the enemies seem to respawn more often than necessary, and in my convenience at the worst time. I know I should be more prepared but sometimes I'm more concerned about my bullet count rather than evaporating the enemies, since I get no rewards for doing so (atleast on the hard and nightmare difficulty). This makes encountering respawn enemies feel insignificant and a blockage in the game when I'm in the level do so something else such as traversing the ops level to discuss with that corrupted guy on the bridge or whatnot. Again to clarify, re spawning enemies aren't a bad, but they can be rather annoying at times especially when encountered in multitudes of strength

Only when you try to wrench them, all you have to do is crouch. Their hitboxes aren't problem when you shoot them
>weapon degradation
what is maintenance

>meanwhile glaring ss1 gameplay flaws are "minuscule"
uhuh
>>
>>343368417
The latter parts of the game were rushed as fuck. It wouldn't surprise me if the ending of the game was originally going to be different.
>>
>>343368687
My bad, they were Ramblers in my localization
>>
>>343368405
Big Daddies and Ramblers thanks for correcting me both charge at you, Big Daddy only does it out of protecting the Little Sister.

>some of them use ranged weapons
For some reason I completely forgot about that. I guess I just focused on the size and power the two enemies received in the game. Although I find it extremely humorous how the Rambler is presented as this big menacing enemy until you actually him. You could just continuously back away without even doing sidestepping to go faster and he won't hit you. Atleast at 2 stamina or whatever the stat for that was called

See >>343366757
No character building=use everything at disposal and trivialize combat, instead of managing skill points and solving problems only based on your choices

No environmental interaction=follow the giant arrow above your character that tells you where to go. Take it off and it only frustrates further since you can't do anything out of order, even if you find a key before the scripted event telling you that a key is necessary to advance. Linear as fuck.

Creativity=less enemy types, less different types of situations you're put into (even the bosses were just regular enemies with bullet sponge levels of health)...you should really get the picture by now.

siding with SHODAN would essentially have rendered your victory in System Shock 1 irrelevant. HACKER stopped her at Citadel, but Soldier just lets her completely format XERXES and they share a private spaceship together? One whose warp drive can rewrite reality because SCIENCE?

SHODAN becoming a living meatwaifu would've been the secret noncanon GOOD END
>>
>>343370005
No, Nightdive Studios acquired the rights to the whole series a while after they got the digital distribution rights to SS2.
They've got Otherside Entertainment, a studio with ex-Looking Glass devs, making SS3 while Nightdive is making a remake of System Shock 1.

Hacker probably only started giving a shit once the anti-tech movements kicked in well after his victory.

You could tell from the logs that was were intention from the start.
>>
>>343356385
The GoG version doesn't have as many issues with that, IIRC. It still happens, but not as much.

The worst was when the bulkhead crash would happen, and you'd lose your inventory, but then the other person would have to d/c too, and you'd lose the whole inventory, and get stuck.
