When I was young, my father was a real asshole. He was somebody who always seemed to be on the edge, just ready to snap at somebody. He was just angry all the fucking time, and he was miserable to be around. As a child, it was really intimidating and I felt like I was in danger around him all the time. My brother and my mom also fucking hated him. None of us wanted anything to do with him. The marriage failed shortly after my brother and I moved out, and thank God for that. My brother is still really bitter towards both my parents.
It dawned on my dad just how lowly we all regarded him, and he took some serious steps towards changing his attitude and perspective on life. By the time I left for college, I really felt like I had a dad who loved me and I could depend on under any circumstances.
What really scares me about it though is that despite how much I like him now, I have to say that he was teetering on the edge of just being another deadbeat father whose family hated him. I had absolutely no intentions of staying in contact with him before he made these changes. Through all his anger and confusion, he managed to realize how awful he was being to his family. We all lived together, but he was totally alone in improving himself. He had no support. I don't feel remorse for this.
It's just funny to me how being an angry person has to be one of the hardest things in the world to recover from. IF you can realize you need to change, you have to do it alone, because you've most likely already ostracized yourself from everyone around you. They want nothing to do with you, even if you're trying to make yourself better.
