Really great music, designs, backgrounds, world, and characters. It a very 80's anime pastiche with cartoony designs. A lot of people complain about the models, and say they look the worst out of the three PS games, but I like them the most. You just want to dive right in and explore everything.
I'd love to visit that world again. Sadly, we never did. The sequels and remake have a totally different feel and tone. I suspect Square doesn't even understand what made their game so appealing.

Pretty much the same is true for every game with 2D backgrounds. Even something as late as RE1 remake they lost the backgrounds. RE:0 is the only one that I know of where they saved them and got a proper HD remaster instead of just slapping some upscaling filters on.

It's more memorable because it hits that sweet spot between representational and realistic graphics, which causes your imagination to fully engage in order to fill in the gaps. In a way, FFVII is a very personal game for a lot of people who played it, because everyone imagines it differently. It's hard to describe.
Basically PS1 era graphics are nostalgic as fuck because they are basic enough to engage the player's imagination but detailed enough to give it plenty to work with.
Other examples are one well done special effect in an old film like Alien is worth ten times more than the CGI fests we're treated to today. You become a passive observer to things rather than an active one.
Also the characters and locations are all really varied and full of interest. That helps a shit ton as well. The combat system is pretty good and the music is fantastic.

Using prerendered backgrounds and leaving the fights as random encounters allows for better atmosphere. This way the director can manage the lighting and angles to bring out the best of every shot.
Another factor is that in an action game, you need room to jump, run and fight, which can often mess with the proportions of an area and completely ruin its character.

I just finished FFVII last night. And honestly, while it had good music and good ideas, most of it was poorly executed. I spent more time fighting the controls and UI than actually playing the game. The translation was also horrible, making the story more convoluted than it needs to be. And I was able to break the game haflway through Disk 1 with just Transform + Added Ability. Let alone all the other crazy materia I gained later. I also beat Sephiroth before his song looped once.

You probably have rose tinted glases of the game since you memorized everything. But running on those pre rendered backgrounds is a massive chore. Especially since there's so many invisible walls and blocked off areas that otherwise look like they can be walked on.
The game also just does a piss poor job of telling you where to go. The worst example of this I remember is that the game tells you near the end to rush to the Mako cannon and fight Hojo. But the obvious path its leading you on actually winds up at the SHinra building. There are 9 whole corridors that are blocked off and you can't enter them...except for the last one which leads to the Mako Cannon. So that's 9 screens where you can only take the right path. But then on the very last screen, the right path leads to the Shinra Building and the left path leads to the Mako Cannon. The only clue you get that you need to backtrack is Cait Sith running out of the Shinra Building saying "No, its not that way!" (and why the hell was he at the Shinra Building anyway?) There's dozens of little issues like this all over the game. Hopefully the remake will fix it. But most likely the remake will just create new issues.
When it comes to the UI, there's lots of issues. For example, you set a character to attack and they rush towards the enemy. Then while they're attacking, you set a second character to attack. If you end up moving the cursor to try and target a new enemy, it instead moves to your teammate who is standing on the enemy line doing their attack. The game doesn't recognize friend from foe, rather where on the playing field they are standing. And anyone on the left side is automatically considered an enemy. This was fixed with FFVIII and all future FF games. But its yet another UI issue in FFVII.
I also could never find an option to organize materia on the materia screen, despite having 10 different options to organize items on the items screen.

I had these issues back when I played it the first time in 1998. Back then, it was even worse since nearly all other games at the time were 2D with refined controls and FFVII was trying to do something drastically different.
But you can't argue with FFVII fanboys. They will always think their game is perfect. Which is why making a remake is stupid. All they'll do is complain about it (after buying it).

It wasn't the first rpg I ever played but it was the first rpg that I cared enough to figure out.
The art direction is what captivated me the most, combined with the music it was just really cool. I spent hours exploring the different areas. I remember being in awe of the fact that when you leave Midgard, there's a huge world to explore (at that point I thought the whole game took place in Midgard).
I think I was probably about 13 or 14 when I first played it, and I didn't understand some of the more adult themes or the story in general until much later in my life, but it was still pretty captivating, and was the first game that made me really start to confront things like death or romance. On my very first playthrough of the game I got stuck quite a few times which was challenging because I couldn't just use the internet to find the answers. When I first got to the part in the game where aeris dies I actually completely restarted the game because I thought I messed up somewhere.
I know it's become kind of a meme game, but as someone who played it when it was relevant it's alright. It has some flaws and it's not even my favorite FF game but it was still p neat.

>The game also just does a piss poor job of telling you where to go. The worst example of this I remember is that the game tells you near the end to rush to the Mako cannon and fight Hojo. But the obvious path its leading you on actually winds up at the SHinra building. There are 9 whole corridors that are blocked off and you can't enter them...except for the last one which leads to the Mako Cannon. So that's 9 screens where you can only take the right path. But then on the very last screen, the right path leads to the Shinra Building and the left path leads to the Mako Cannon. The only clue you get that you need to backtrack is Cait Sith running out of the Shinra Building saying "No, its not that way!" (and why the hell was he at the Shinra Building anyway?) There's dozens of little issues like this all over the game. Hopefully the remake will fix it. But most likely the remake will just create new issues.

Underneath Midgar, you run along a path where there are forks in the road every other screen. But on all of these forks, only the right option can be taken. After a while, the average player is gonna stop checking the left path, sensing a pattern.
Except at the very end, the left path is the one you have to take. And the right path leads to the Shinra building.

I didn't even play VIA when it came out but you're complaint about not knowing where to go was dumb.
The game does that at times but you neglect the fact that when you do go off course and explore you were often rewarded with materia or something else.
I'd rather have a game that let's me immerse myself and explore environments over one that is linear and handholds me through the story.
