Two years after the ending of Final Fantasy IX.
The happy ending was not to last. Zidane has not accepted by many of the subjects in Alexandria as rumours circulated that he was the brother of Kuja, whose wrath had brought such death and destruction to their world. Not to mention the fact that he frankly lacked the intelligence to rule a country, being more apt with 'street smarts.' It all caused a massive strain on his relationship with Queen Garnet, who also had become tired of his incredibly high libido. Her ass simply could not take it anymore, which led to arguments.
Freya was also having a hard time. Fratley never did remember her, causing her pain every day. Eventually, she thought it best for both of them if she simply moved on.
Meeting in a pub for drinks and reminiscing, this is the suprisingly bad news an increasingly drunken duo had to share. Zidane looks into the bottom of his last pint, and sighs. He really thought everything would work out for them both, but now...
Suddenly, he feels a hand on his leg, and looks up into the blushing, yet keen face of Freya.

Why is FFIX so much more fun than 8? You can break 8 just after you leave Balamb Garden and breeze through 99% of the game giving 9999 dmg to everyone while having 9999 health because of triple triad and junctioning the curaga you got from tents.
FFIX has a way more fun system, fun cast of characters (reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy, a bunch of losers and rejects gather up to save the world), useful and rewarding treasure and a story I give a fuck about. Even fucking Necron has a better final speech than Ultimecia that says the words "Time" and "kompression". Also a better love story that is actually developed by character interaction (funny, since the game that should focus on the main love story is VIII) and it isn't even the main focus of the game, there is so much more things going on.
Also, almost all locations in IX are magical, comfy and gives you a sense of adventure that only Morrowind gave me. Everything in VIII seems so dead and boring, except for that fisherman village.

Every FF suffers from forgettable characters that are there just to give the player more party members, even FF IX but the core cast was pretty good.
While Steiner and Vivi are superior characters than Zidane y don't think Zidane or Sarah are forgettable at all.
As far as MC go Zidane is one of the best on a FF. Tidus was pretty good too, yes yes, he was a shallow whinny prick but by the end of the game you feel sorry for him instead of hating him and he ends up carrying a really heavy burden.
I like Zidane better though but that's a matter of personal taste.

Maybe Vaan and Penelo could have been better if the dev team didn't have to suffer so much. Keeping that in mind, I can kinda forgive Square Enix for not having Vaan and Penelo be as good of characters as they could have been.
But yeah, Balthier, Ashe, and Basch were based.
