Ryse, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Quantum Break look better than The Order and Uncharted 4.

Xbox/PC graphics > PS4

Actually, no, those games look mediocre. Ryse is 3 years old, ROTR looks like a 360 game and Quantum Break is horribly inconsistent.

I played all of them on PC and Ryse is the best looking one of the 3 and even that one has some really bad looking areas. Tomb Raider looks good, but not amazing and Quantum Break has great surface reflactions, but that's about it
The Order is pretty much photo realistic and Uncharted looks either really really good or just good.

That goes to movies like Transformers, but we all know those movies are garbage.

Same applies here. Games that spend most of their time and effort looking nice typically have shitty gameplay and are bad games.

Games like Uncharted and Witcher might look nice but the gameplay is awful. These developers seem to be keen on the idea that visual fidelity and a "cinematic" presentation in which the player has no real control is what makes a game immersive and they're hilariously incorrect. Super Mario Bros. on NES is more immersive than Witcher 3.

The lighting in battlefront abuses bloom and god rays WAY too much, as well as having worse textures for the most part compared to EC (mainly because EC's textures are literally photorealistic since they were all primarily scanned from real life objects).

Also I hate the "Realism" == good grapics trend. I want some fucking styalization goddammit. If I wanted to look at a realistic landscape I'd go outside. Both Battlefront and EC are pretty good at this though.

Fourteen seconds of bad trees just bring the whole game down. Seriously Uncharted 4 is one of the best looking games out there. I have no bias one way or the other. I have an excellent PC, WiiU, PS4, and a now redundant, XBOXONE. While Rise of the Tomb Raider looks pretty good, Uncharted looks pretty great. Still not sure how they were able to pull some of that off without starting a house fire. The Order looks pretty good too, but not quite on the level of Rise of the Tomb Raider or Uncharted 4. Batman Akham Knight is really nice looking as well. The character models that games are making this generation are really really good. Some of them tread toward uncanny valley like Until Dawn, but Until Dawn stays just outside. I can't really say much about Quantum Break, as I haven't gotten to it yet, but all the changes that it had since reveal kind of killed my interest. I'll have to give that one a shot later. Right now at this moment, I'd have to saw Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. I'm not sure if I'm missing any of the heavy hitters. Unfortunately PC is losing out this generation with getting nothing but fucking multiplats. I understand that this is just the way the business is going to be, but I would like to see something really awesome and unique hit the PC. I'm afraid those days are over.

Uncharted looks fantastic. It's nothing like Ubisoft downgrade or even their own downgrade of Uncharted 3. Chloe.jpg is done now. The problem with Ubisoft games is that you have to really follow all the different studios within the studio. Some of them are capable of making something look quite nice like Assassin's Creed Syndicate. While others make Rainbow Six.
The Witcher 3 looks quite nice too, no certainly not as amazing as it's announcement trailers but quite good nonetheless.

Yeah. They did a lot of the stuff by hand so anywhere they missed something, didn't have time to mess with a thing, or just were constrained by the PS4 being weak the game looks bad compared to other things.

They also relied way too much on their textures and lighting and left a lot of low poly/generally shit stuff lying around because it wasn't a priority and they didn't have the time to make everything look good the way they were doing things.
>>
>>343325206
Well, when you're trying to say it looks "realistic" yeah, saying its stylized is perfectly valid.

It honestly does look fairly stylized, and I can't find the particular screen I'm thinking of but Ciri literally looks like she's made of shiny plastic. Not as bad in this screen, but these do not look like they're real people I could go outside and potentially talk to. I find "they look like plastic" to be a perfectly valid point because the characters kind of do.

I don't get how people can say this is the pinnacle of modern WRPGs but then something like Skyrim or FO4 isn't considered an RPG at all. It's open world and it looks so fucking amazing, the detail is beyond amazing, and the atmosphere is drenched in that Bioschock musty old feel to it. Besides the technical fuckups on PC the game is probably the most underrated AAA title this gen.

Even still they pretty much maxed out on graphics with Crysis 3, and they probably want to wait enough years to where Crysis 4 will be the next "Can you run it on your PC?" meme.
>>
>>343325684
It is definetly one of those games that is better to experience yourself than look at screenshots. They use a dynamic soundtrack that changes based on where exactly you're standing in the level to really good effect, and some of the setpieces are super fucking incredible.

The game was basically just a giant tech demo for the technology DICE ended up using for the textures in Battlefront, as well as the skills of the team working on it. http://www.theastronauts.com/2014/03/visual-revolution-vanishing-ethan-carter/ is a good read if you like reading about graphical design in video games.

But yeah it's probably worth the $4 on steam or the PSN store and the few hours it'll take you to play through it.

Did you not play Arkham Knight?

It's more than just textures on the wall, it's the art direction and style. The particles are phenomenal when it comes to rain dripping off ledges and lamp posts, the wind blowing his cape off to the side. And the interiors of buildings have such incredible shading and lighting dynamics. The world comes alive in that world, and keep in mind that it's OPEN WORLD.

I really don't mind because the game looks really great because of it. It was a smart move. Star Wars Battlefront has static backgrounds and that paid dividends. It is interesting to see what developers have to do to make games that look like these on mid to low tier hardware. Fucking wizards.

I remember in an interview before the game was released they explicitly said they could have gone super realistic with the photogrammetry but did not; they wanted a more fantasy(I'm not sure if that's the exact word they used)-like feeling to the game. But this is my point. How can you call Witcher an RPG and then say Skyrim and FO3/4 aren't? All of those Bethesda games offer more room to role-play both in the story and in your combat role and offer more diversity and depth in their RPG mechanics. Again, they're not good games or good RPGs, they're simply better RPGs than The Witcher.

Witcher just looks nice and is well-animated, that's about all it has going for it. The animations look fluid, but the controls and actual gameplay feel clunky and unresponsive as a result because Geralt has to have a little scripted/contextual animation for everything. It exemplifies almost everything wrong with modern RPGs, along with games like FO4 and Skyrim. Little/no depth in the actual gameplay, focus on a story with little meaningful choice that actually affects the story in a real way, extremely shallow combat and limited "builds" and a giant, pretty-but-empty open world with the same copy-pasted fetch quests and repetitive enemies and encounters.
>>

>>
>>343330187
Explain how it looks like shit faggot
>>
>>343330574
But that "choice and consequence" has no real consequence in terms of the world or the main story. Sure, some NPC might not be there at the end, you might get different dialogue, but that's about all it amounts to. Little/nothing in the world changes. And even if Witcher had some nice dialogue, it's still a game, not a book or film. Gameplay needs to come first. Making dialogue choices is fine gameplay if you're playing an adventure game, but I like my RPGs to have fleshed-out RPG elements and mechanics..

>a world that isn't just set dressing but is actually believable and has thought put into it.
Nope, the world is the same barren, repetitive shit you see in FO and TES. Bandit camps with the same randomly generated, useless loot, the same "FOLLOW THE BIG ARROW" fetch-quests. Witcher 3 would have been better off and more focused if it were not open world.

Xenoblade X is easily the best open-world game in a long, long time because the world itself is actually fun and interesting visually and to explore. Verticality actually exists and you're not motivated to explore by doing fetch-quests or potentially finding loot, you're motivated by simply wanting to see what's there because the world itself and the geography are interesting enough to warrant it.

Well you don't know what gameplay is I guess.

I'm not even the biggest fan of W3 and have many problems/gripes with it. It does a whole lot right and a whole lot wrong. One of the things done very well are the roleplaying aspects, which are very important in, you guessed it, an RPG.

The combat in Planescape is utter dogshit but god damn if it isn't one of the best RPGs ever made. Also JRPGs are not RPGs but adventure games or whatever the fuck you wanna call em.

Wicther is an action/adventure game with RPG elements, and its RPG elements are weak. It's just bafflingly hypocritical to say Skyrim or FO aren't RPGs but Witcher is, let alone that its a good RPG or even 10/10 GOTY. More proof that production values seem to matter more than actual gameplay, just sad.

>>343330574
>Choice & consequence, dialogue that matters

And Skyrim and FO give you about as much room to do that anyway, even if the writing and dialogue isn't good at all. Siding with the Stormcloaks or Imperials has about as much impact on the world as anything you do in
Witcher. And then, of course, those games also have a wider array of skills and combat options, allow you to design your character and don't stick that character with a voice and a set backstory (barring FO4, of course.) they're not good RPGs but they're better RPGs than Witcher.
>>
>>343332208
What RPG mechanics are there exactly in Skyrim/FO4. How many meaningful ways can you solve problems, obstacles, etc. with different character builds or having made different choices in interactions earlier. C&C is non existent in these games, there are no RPG elements, no matter what route you pick nothing matters. Fallout 4 and Skyrim are not RPGs. By this logic Far Cry is a RPG because it has character progression by killing X jaguars.
