literally every gen except gen 1 looks the same. the reason they chose this is to make pokemon more marketable. more cartoony means a wider audience, and more versatile for merchandise.
as much as you want it, no one will take you seriously for being a pokemon fan. although the first gen designs were objectively better, the new designs are designed to sell, not to introduce the franchise in the first place.

I cant remember the names of 20 gen 6 pokemon. Gen 6 completely passed me over with really extraordinarily dumb designs; and this is coming from someone whose generation favorites actually went in reverse. Gen 5 was my favorite, followed by 4, 3, then 1 then 2.
But Gen 6 had some shitty Pokemon, and easily the worst zone in the history of Pokemon. Say what you want about Gen 3's water trumpets, but ORAS was as smooth as butter.
The only Pokemon I liked from Gen 6 was Hawlucha while the only Pokemon I hated from Gen 5 was Vanillux.

I understood the concept, and making a 3 headed dragon was bound to be difficult, but to make it as doofy looking as Hydreigon was a bad move.
However, that said, Vanillux also belonged to the same generation. A lot of "multiple" mutants existed there. Druddigon was an okay looking dragon though, even if it was completely shitty, it was at least their attempt to make a basic mid-game dragon type that didnt need to be leveled up and evolved through the course of the game, like Dratini or whatever.

Visual Design, pokemons is pokemons. I keep trying to make some of my personal favorites like Dunsparce and Sandslash work, even though they usually don't, but I digress.
My biggest gripe with Gen 6 was the introduction of Fairy. I still don't have the new rules encoded into my DNA, and since I'm not a kid anymore, I don't think I can fully grasp all of it ever anymore, either. Fairy Vexes me.
