All the black and the shaded color template in combination with its difficulty makes the game a stressful experience for me.
If the colors were lighter and more vibrant with less black everywhere I'd have an easier time calling it the best 2D mario.

I really don't get why Miyamoto circlejerks SMB3 so much. Maybe because it fits his whole shtick that all the Mario games are just gigantic plays in his mind and SMB3 fits that mold, and therefore all games must follow SMB3's lead because of it.

Not that guy, but the series has followed a predictable set up for world maps (Ice, Forest, Desert, etc.). The level design is no different than what you would find in SMB3. Secrets, sure, but not on the same level of head-scratching difficulty like in World, and the newer games have done it worse with simple secrets and/or coin chemtrails leading you on to new secrets.
The powerups may have gotten varied, but are more limited in their handling.
Bosses aren't as varied. Sure, it's always gonna be 'hit three times', and World wasn't as varied, either. Good boss design was achieved in Sunshine and Galaxy 1, but died with NSMBWii and remained stagnant.
That's just my take, I guess. I love 3, but it's a close second to World for me.

Its an opinion on level designs when comparing SMB3 and world. Both have fantastic and shitty stages.
Cape was fun, but broke the game. The only way to do something similar in 3 was with the super P wing, and that was only for one stage.
Post game content can be done way before post game, i will state it doesn't count. Secrets ill give, but only by default. Same for flying mechanics. My opinion is thus: SMB3 is far more varied when compared to World, world is more of a faster pace mario,, and had many more auto scrollers.

Hell the Forest of Illusion taught you early that you had to change your notion that all you had to do is go right and win to advance through the area, and then when you apply that logic to the rest of the game you realize that the level design for large parts of he game are more nuanced than meets the eye.

No, NSMB is a bastardized child Mario 1 and World. Every single track ecxept for the fortress and bosses in World was a mixed up theme of the first stage music. Same in NSMB. Spin jump originated in World, and a mor lame version of it is in NSMB. Simplistic backgrounds in world carried over to NSMB series. Blame Mario 3 all you want, but most of the trends in NSMB design stem from World.
