I lived in Tokyo for a while and was treated to a morning show where the hosts talked about current events while eating food they had brought, and they also discussed the food as well.
It was explained to me that there were two major draws to this. Asians in general are incredibly lonely people, so they eat while watching these programs and get a feeling that they are eating breakfast with other people. Like a pseudo-family event in front of the TV.
Additionally, there is also a different food culture wherein it is believed that you can get enjoyment and joy from seeing other people enjoying and reacting positively to a good meal, which is why the hosts go to great lengths to describe the flavor, texture and experience. Being able to tell your coworkers that you enjoyed a great and expensive meal yesterday is not necessarily a lie just because you watched someone else eat it, you still enjoyed it.
Good restaurants in Japan are also incredibly expensive, so watching people eat what is considered "top-tier food" is an experience in itself, as most working class Japanese (and likely most east asians) can rarely if ever afford it themselves. A dish with even a little beef in it for example can easily cost a good chunk of a monthly wage, so the alternative is simply to watch others eat instead of eating yourself, while imagining that you are eating.
