I don't think anybody claimed that people would stop playing Skyrim because of Witcher 3. The games target very different demographics, and in addition with mods and the radiant quests you really can play Skyrim forever if you so wish.
Manufactured rivalry is the worst. Remember back when Dark Souls was about to release, and different sites ran articles about which would be better, it or Skyrim. After all, both are fantasy games with dragons.

Fewer mods, shorter game. Witcher 3 is some 120 hrs if you do wverything for every dlc, Skyrim is longer than tha vanilla and without the generating quest system, add that system and mod campaigns you have a much longer/ever growing game.
