People said the exact same thing about the sixth generation too.
All this "diminishing returns", "barely noticeable graphics upgrade", "games don't actually play any better", etc., etc. stuff was going on all through the early days of the seventh gen same as it is today for the eighth gen.
Then that one game that can't be done on the previous generation comes along and people see the value. Dead Rising was a good example of that for the seventh gen, that game could never happen on sixth gen hardware.
