At least in the 64 version, the bosses could be fought as child Link or the mask for that story arc. You can snipe Goht and Twinmold with the bow, if you're good enough. You can kill Odolwa with just the sword and shield. You can use the Hookshot to kill Gyorg. There weren't even "dungeon items" in the game, they are all acquired outside, the only thing in the temples are the elemental arrows.
