If you play Monopoly by the correct rules, it doesn't actually go for too long.
Free parking is not a depository for taxes and other stuff. It is just that: free parking. It's an island for when the game becomes a minefield that will bankrupt you late game.
If you don't want to buy a property, it immediately goes up for auction.
If you are in jail, you can still collect rent.
So many fucking people break these rules in favor of house rules, and it makes games run WAYYYY too long.

It was actually made as an illustration of how unregulated capitalism is really dangerous. There was meant to be a second phase where it all went to shit (and I think it actually was prototyped), but it wasn't fun so it didn't make it to the final build.

That's not even comparable.
There's nowhere in Melee where it says "you can't wavedash," so wavedashing is okay.
However, the rules for free parking are specifically enumerated, and breaking them drastically slows the flow of the game.

If you had reading comprehension you'd see that I said that breaking those rules fucks up the pacing of the game and makes it run upwards of twice the length of a normal game.
In the case of a game like monopoly, that is too long, unless you have 6 hours to kill for some reason.
