I suppose it was the idea that the female scientist believed that theywere obligated to fulfill the old man's original contract, while still finding a way for his last moments to be with the woman that he had once loved. Granted it's all still an illusion and, he was never able to truly reconnect with her before her death, making it sort of hollow last comfort.
