No, the reason they didn't make one is purely because the Wii U flopped. If it had sold, you'd have seen an Animal Crossing U already, along with other games from stable of IPs, but nope. They pretty much stopped announcing anything but spinoffs ever since the NX came into existence.
Game kind of stopped being fun for me after I finished decorating my town. Now instead of being able to relax and enjoy life with my villagers I constantly have to live in fear that someone will move out and then someone new will put their house down in the worst possible spot ruining everything.

It'd be cool if every villager had their own unique dialogue. Nothing major but nice tweaks to truly differentiate them. Also add more personality types. And maybe their personality towards you changes depending on wheteher you're nice to them or not. That can add alot to the gameplay. I remember when we had a big party for new years eve and I had the game running in the basement, it was such a fun novelty for everyone, by the time new years did ring in, almost everyone at the party went to the basement to do the countdown with the game. If you already have 3 houses and 7 villagers in 'desirable' spots, and depending on water, rocks and 'no growth' patches placement, you can greatly control where villagers can move in to a select group of areas if you drop down Large PwP in the right spots to corral them and then use plot reset to confirm they're not trying to set up shop so unless you want a specific villager, you don't have to worry about them building their plot on your path 99% of the time now.
