The Japanese people stopped buying anything that's not on a handheld or for a phone.
No point in trying to make good games if nobody will buy them, and the Japanese companies do not care about non-Japanese people.

They don't have big enough budgets to keep up with the inflating costs of video game production which the west has been turning into another Hollywood, where only the biggest, most expensive games that pander to the largest audience can succeed. This + the introduction of smart phones has fucked up the entire industry beyond repair.

Western games generally are just the same fantasy bullshit over and over again.
