Video game music is generally poor relative to the genre it's trying to emulate and you are indeed a plebeian nerd if you listen to it a disproportionate amount.

That said there are lots of fun soundtracks and there's nothing wrong with having fun.

Given the amount of quality music out there video game music shouldn't be taking up much more than about 2% of your listening time. You only have one life on this earth, guys.

It's infuriating sometimes, i want to play a rpg, pay attention to the story, but i fucking can't, something inside me just forces me to put music on so i can continue playing. It's horrible, i just want this to end so i can come back to playing normally.

Vox Vulgaris is a particularly "fun" troupe for pseudo-Medieval and pseudo-Renaissance music, similar to Corvus Corax.

If you like stuff a little more legit I recommend maybe the Unicorn Ensemble or Oni Wytars. Still very fun and rythmic.
>>
>>343215231
The vast majority of vidya music is purely instrumental, so it's hard to compare it to most radio-type music. But for actual argument, can you tell me why this specifically would never have it to radio or MTV?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMqOMFW3Gt8
>>
>>343208420
OST's are usually something really generic and tame so it wouldn't bother a large percent of the playerbase.
Your own songs give your gaming experience a special flavor that other people might not like.
You're basically shaming everyone for not being content with just a very mild amount of salt.
>>
>>343215114
Not that faggot you're arguing with, but typically video game music is a lot shallower in terms of the soundscape.

In vgm, there's typically only 2 layers to the music and all vgm that people consider good is either just a catchy beat (which is the typical argument against radio music) or some pretentious orchestral shit.

Imho, the only notable soundtrack this gen that i can think of is Splatoon which explored so many sounds that others would never touch.
>>
>>343215237
Agreed. Most video game music is extremely derivative of other music, some of it even being ripped off or sampled from other popular music. If you genuinely believe it's better than other music, it's because you don't listen to very much music to begin with.

Vidya music tends to be better then whatever gets released now, just on the fact that devs figure no one's going to really care about it and it's primary purpose is to fill background silence and accenuate atmosphere. So the musicians are given free reign to do whatever they want. There's no target group to cater to and force your music around.
>>
>>343215748
>A song being on radio or MTV is my measure of quality.

Tbh, the song's pretty one-dimensional. If the sax were a tad higher pitched, it would've served as a nice punctuation mark for the band to switch it up a bit and push the narrative further/harder.

Civ 3 has good music, but it's got nothing on 4 (yes, I know it's not an "original" soundtrack, but it just fits so perfeclty). Civ 4 is the only game that I don't turn off the music to listen to my own.

Honestly, I don't leave the OST on anymore. Sometimes even if I'm starting the game for the first time.

I just don't like hearing repeated/looped music more than just a few times, and every game is guilty of this. I don't understand how people can listen to 10-minute extended (looped) versions of songs on Youtube, either.

If the OST is noteworthy, I often will add it to my playlists, and thus it might come up as I play the game (or other games).

For short, fine-tuned "artistic" games, I will often leave the music on. But, if it's cinematic Hollywood garbage, then into the trash it goes.

Oh, I remember Panzers were OP in that game.

Russia's Cossacks were a comparable unit for the previous age. Holy shit, they were kind of OP, too.

Also, nukes were neither as effective nor satisfying in the later games. It really felt like reducing a continent to wasteland - not simply inconveniencing their workers.

>Video game music is generally poor relative to the genre it's trying to emulate
This. I do actually like some chiptunes, though, because even if they try to emulate some genre (e.g. classic MegaMan's rock sound), it sounds distinct enough to be its own thing. I especially hate when video game music has "uncanny valley" Garage-Band-tier MIDI instead of live recorded music (the synthesized jazz pieces in later pokemon games).

Kind of related is why I think the Genesis music was more interesting than the SNES. Most SNES music sounded like cheap MIDI trying to emulate instruments, while the Genesis had raw FM synthesis that made for a very unique sound.

I enjoy it, video game music has the upside of being easy on the ears usually since they're generally are made to be enjoyable to listen to even if it's played over and over again 50 times.

Not to mention that video game music tend to be made with a certain emotion, theme or mood in mind.

Video music doesn't try to prove a point, it's not trying to be "Artistic" or anything like that. It's just pure music, aimed to invoke emotions and be pleasing for the ears. And that's more than what can be said about a lot of music.

>It's just pure music, aimed to invoke emotions and be pleasing for the ears.

It's also that videogame music emphasizes melodies. Melody + tone alone has insane symbolic potential, so game composers make ample use of that complexity to really tell a story and immerse you in an atmosphere. Super Metroid comes to mind for me, and so does A Link to the Past, and their music is pretty damn great for being on the SNES (especially because of the melodies).

Melodies are also the most complex part of a song to interpret, and songs can take weeks to really "click" if the melody is particularly potent. I imagine that doesn't attract pop-music fans, and doesn't matter to people who just use their "music taste" as a kind of social posture.

It isn't, at least relative to what it's trying to emulate. Guaranteed you'd enjoy exploring the source material if you like its wannabe little brothers. There's nothing inherently positive about it being from video games unless you're an autist or it's nostalgic, which is also possible with non-video game music.

What do you mean "emulate", music is music, and whatever genre it's trying to encapsulate, it IS that. You probably think VGM being bad is an objective fact rather than you're own opinion.

>>
>>343226454
For the vast majority of video game music, "emulate" is an apt word; it's a direct emulation of existing music, moreso than usual. And I didn't say it wasn't quality -- almost everything has some quality -- I said it lacks quality relative to what directly -- very directly -- inspired it.

The rest of your post is butthurt lashing out. I made no mention of "real" music or "objective" taste. You're just pouting. I'm not the one belittling video game music. Some of it is very good, and almost all music is inspired. You're the one overestimating it. I'm telling you, and I'm almost certainly right, that if you were to spend the time exploring the source material that game composers draw from, you'd be more fulfilled than some manchild who spends all or most of his time listening to VGM.

Stay mad.
>>
>>343226808
This

Touhou OSTs and ZUN albums are great.
>>
>>343225804

A song in a game is made to run along side and exchange with other elements in the game. So, if anything is responsible for game music being only about 40% as good as a song for its own sake is, it might be mostly that, rather than a failure to emulate the best moments in a genre. I mean, if song is kept in a lesser form for the sake of assimilating it into a bigger network of overlapping sensory forms, the song is being pared down for the greater good.

This is pretty much why music in games can (and almost always do) lose their charms when heard on their own. Their charm came from overlapping with the game, yet their potential as a self-contained "universe of music" had to be curbed to let that juiciness flow.
>>
>>343227304
>I made no mention of "real" music or "objective" taste. I'm not the one belittling video game music.
Well it was heavily implied, the way you used the word emulation made it feel so the derivative work is factually worse than what inspired it.

This entire post is confusing. You mention yourself that almost all music is inspired yet at the same time VGM for whatever reason lacks the quality of whatever it was derived from. Now it also seems like you changed your stance because now you mention that some VGM is good.

>You're just pouting. You're the one overestimating it. I'm almost certainly right, that if you were to spend the time exploring the source material that game composers draw from, you'd be more fulfilled than some manchild who spends all or most of his time listening to VGM.
You either have very poor choice of words or just generally a disrespectful person. You can't tell me that VGM lacks quality and that I should listen to it's source which to you is more fulfilling, and at the same time tell me you're not being belittling. Then again you're whole post was weird so I don't even know.
