A rhetorical question, or just a newfag who's never seen one of those THOUSANDS of STALKER threads on /v/??

They're fucking brilliant mate!

Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: >>>/vg/stalker

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

Very flawed yet very unique games, especially in terms of atmosphere.
Shadow of Chernobyl is more linear but still has a good amount of side content and open maps to explore. There are several mods for it

Clear Sky takes space before SoC and is considered the weakest but is still worth a playthrough If you enjoyed SoC. Barely any mods

Call of Pripyat is pretty good. To me this one is the strongest in terms of atmosphere. The maps are more open and much larger than previous entries. Decent amount of mods
>>
>>343202082
Yes.
I have this old craptop with i3 @ 2.1ghz + Intel HD 3000, and I get > 75fps average at 1366x768, med-high settings, DirectX8 "Static Lighting" mode, with Starter Pack's graphics mods installed, if I keep V-sync off.

Dynamic Lighting requires quite a bit more graphical powers, and will bomb your framerates on a mere HD 3000 chip.
>>
>>343202631
What killed CS for me were the awful bugs and crappy upgrade system.

Also, only two endings.
>>
>>343200171
SoC has a higher enrgy, and focused more on settlements and the people.
Clear Sky is low energy, and more open field atmophere
COP is nice i guess, still can't beat SoC.

>>343201341
>Just bought Call of Pripyat. I've played Clear Skies and SoC; I absolutely love SoC but am ambivalent towards CS. Looking forward to it because I heard it is more SoC than CS. Any recommended mods or should I play vanilla?

CoP's the most tested and thus stable of all STALKER games out of the box, so you should be fine.

Some people consider it to look the worst of the three though, so you may wanna try applying Absolute Nature + AtmosFear on top to help that. FOV Switcher is always handy too.

All those are included in the CoP's Starter Pack. Just make sure to NOT install the mini-HUD that comes with AtmosFear nowadays, unless you like pushing your nose to your screen every time you want to make out the tiny symbols.
>>

In what sense? They share the same narrative, if thats what you mean. Other than that, yeah, you can jump to CoP

It's still a bit of an mystery. But the general idea seems to be that:

>Development was going well
>50% + done in late 2011
>Some corrupted Ukrainian parties started circling around the big pile of dosh Stalker had created
>Sergei, the CEO of GSC, calls it quits and kicks everyone else out
>He kept the STALKER's IP all himself, and started looking for new team

The matter whether Sergei saved the project and team, or was just a money-hungry jew, is still up to debate. There was also rumors of some potential publishers disappearing when the early discussions about potential console-ports went nowhere.

Release order is best order.

Shadow of Chernobyl is the first game. Best story and introduces the lore. The start is a bit slow as the first guns are absolute crap. There's also multiple endings and only one of them is canon for the sequels.
Clear Sky is the second game and a prequel to SoC, but it assumes you know the first game's lore and sort of spoils its twists. It doesn't really add any relevant new story stuff either (it's mentioned literally only once by a side character in CoP) and the faction system is a bit shit. You can skip this if you wish, though it's not all bad.
Call of Pripyat is the last game in both release and chronological order. Most polished gameplay mechanics of the bunch. Great side quests, however the main story isn't that impressive as you already know the lore and twists, though it provides some good closure to the series.

Play on Master difficulty because it affects both you and the enemies' bullet sponginess.
Throw bolts to scout dangerous anomalies.

No idea why'd you want to use mods from 2008 anyway this day and age, unless you play the FAR superior AMK1.4, that is.

Complete's totally obsolete, casual and buggy POS, and completely (lol) dethroned by Starter Pack's mods.

Attaboy!
FYI, Oblivion Lost literally, as in dictionary definition seriously ripped of AMK, and only sprayed tons of random "for teh lulz" shit on top.

Many elder Anons such as myself started our modding habbits with OL back in the days, but I always considered it to have some super weird design choices. If only I'd realized to try AMK sooner, so I would not have had to spend countless hours tweaking OL into bearable form.

>>343208508
>Unique weapons and armor you found while exploring breaking apart with no way to replace is pretty terrible.
No, it's not.
It makes you adapt to changing situations, pre-plan your gear and actions more carefully, and overall adds to the scavenging & survival elements of the game.

>I got that repair mod a week after the vanilla game was released, it was a blessing.

CoP, more fun and more mod support. Just buy SoC, playthrough that, then buy CoP and install Call of Chernobyl mod. CoP has no atmosphere, its so easy its not even funny, I've speed ran it without glitches in 20 minutes and no deaths.
Is no more open than SoC but feels more enclosed with its round maps with no content on the edges, again is WAY too easy, has almost no good mods vs SoC with hundreds.
Weapons and visuals feel like a step down.
Side Missions are easily brute forcable and lack are too short.
Chenobyl is a daycare ez mode with no content.
You can't even join Freedom or Duty.
You are not a real loner.
You are a nobody that accomplishes nothing important.
New mutants are killable with a knife even on its "hardest mods"

It only ran like ass before final patch and on the swamps because of the tall grass.

It ran like a dream after that, it still has to date one of the most interesting mods and Road to Limansk is shaping up to be top tier mod.

I don't know how its not memorable, it has the CNPP and Strelok in the flesh as a real NPC in full powered Ukrainian mode.

CoP doesn't even have CNPP and Strelok just shows up like a normie NPC doing nothing but following waypoints at the end.

If anything CoP is the most bland of the series, sure it might be fun to fuck around but nothing special happens and its too DAMN EASY.

Nobody forced you to help NPCs capture an area other than a couple of times to advance the storyline.

You don't play this games like this, you don't follow its instructions like if you were playing a bland hallway FPS.

I bet you didn't even know 90% of the SoC map is explorable from the very start, yet I double bet you followed each area like if you were trying to 100% it.
